I'm looking to rebarrel a 700 this winter and want to stay with a 20" barrel. I have it broken down to these 2 calibers, I don't need them to shoot 1000 yards, mainly 600 yards and closer. Is there really going to be big difference or is this going to be a preference build?

Re: 20" 243 vs 20" 6.5 Creedmore

I shoot 6x47 with a long barrel but if I were building a 20" carbine I'd do 6.5 to take advantage of the extra BC since the velocity would be less.

Re: 20" 243 vs 20" 6.5 Creedmore

I shoot a 6.5CM in a longer 28" barrel, the round does everything as advertise. You don't mention what type of shooting your planning on. If your going out to 600yds, skip the added expense and get a R700 5R in 308, or a 1-7 or 8 twist 223. With that fast of a twist you can shoot the heavy 223 bullets. With a 308, factory ammo is cheaper, there is no reason to reload. Spend the money you save for a upgraded stock.

The down side on the .243 is they burn through barrels faster then most other calibers.

Re: 20" 243 vs 20" 6.5 Creedmore

in that short a barrel i would run a .308 but since it is not an option, go with the creed.

Re: 20" 243 vs 20" 6.5 Creedmore

your killing the benefits of both of those rounds with chopping the barrel that short

Maybe he is, but he plans to only shoot 600 yards or less.

not really "killing the benefits"... just not fully realizing them..

just like a 26" 243 or 6.5CM will shoot flatter, have less wind deflection and recoil than a 26" 308... everything else being equal

so will a 20", just at a slightly lower percentage...

without doing any real math, say in 26", a 243 is 25% better, and a 6.5CM is 18% better... in 20" they may only be 15% and 10% better respectively, but they are still better....

and reduced recoil (felt) will improve, because at 20", we're typically talking about lighter rifles.

Yep my 20" 6.5x47 running 123scenars @ 3023fps is just worthless @ 1k, bullet is supersonic to 1400yds. I often wish i had another 6" of barrel to just tote around.

Listen to those that run short barrels and have first hand experience vs conjecture

</div></div>I have been reading a lot about this cartridge, impressive ballistics to say the least.

Re: 20" 243 vs 20" 6.5 Creedmore

Id say go with the one you like best. I like the creedmoor better. But that's up to you. You already know what most think about a 20" barrel but you obviously want it for a reason. So just build it and you will like it no matter what caliber you choose. I like them both but if you go to the. 243 why not the 6x47 Lapua?

Re: 20" 243 vs 20" 6.5 Creedmore

Will this rifle be used for hunting or just target work? If you plan on hunting with it I would go with the Creedmoor for more thump when the bullet hits. Now just target it will be a which is more important to you thing. The 243 will likely go through barrels quicker but I would throat it for the 105 or 115 pills and have it AI'ed. The Creedmoor will give you just a hair more recoil then the 243. And it seems the 6.5 pills always cost more.

I have both calibers and it would be tough to pick just one! But if I had too I think Creedmoor just because it has more power and I hunt. Either way I'm sure you will be happy with either one.

Re: 20" 243 vs 20" 6.5 Creedmore

It really depends the use of the rifle. if you were shooting a match rifle with top competitors, then you need every inch you can get on the bbl. That said....you can still shoot just fine with a 20" bbl, but a longer bbl will get you more velocity and better ballistics.

Re: 20" 243 vs 20" 6.5 Creedmore

Basically a match rifle, but we shoot at anywhere from 8000-9500 density altitude so its going to shoot flatter. We have some really good shooters up here that I hope to be fairly competitive with. The match is 40 shots, 1 shot each, nobody has shot a perfect match yet. My best was 24 with a 308 and I know I could do better with a little more load work. And on that day I think I tied for 13th out of 38 or so. Basically I just want another caliber to play with. The 243 is probably out, I have a 27" rifle already. The other thought is a 7-08 or 7mm creedmore maybe.

Re: 20" 243 vs 20" 6.5 Creedmore

I just had my 6.5 Creedmoor finished up and its a 21"(20 3/4" really) but it's pushing 130 VLD's between 2850-2890.

I've only confirmed that one chrono but hope to confirm it with dope. It's extremely accurate at 100 and Im sure it will be a steel ringer.

I really like the round and hope to place well this november at a fairly big match.
