hey guys, i was away on a mission for work for a little over 2 months. I got back and my safe had mold on about 7 guns, and about 10 others had surface rust. I had a dehumidifier in the safe too

help guys, i do not want this to happen again

thanks

Re: Help Safe rust/ Mold

I have a golden rod running the length of the rear bottom of my safe as well as a silica box pack on the top shelf with the pistols. My basement is climate controlled for the most part and I have a dehumidifier running in my "war room" as well.

Tell more about your setup, seems odd to have mold unless you're in a swamp.

Mold ??!! This is the first I have heard of moldy guns in a safe. What region do you live in and what kind of safe was it ?

Re: Help Safe rust/ Mold

Mold on guns is not all that rare,

we humans leave even clean ones, residues of fat, salts and or skin cells after us, invluding the fungus, bacteria and so on that we have collected living,

send that "peatrie dish" in to a varm, damp, dark environment and things will happen soon enough.

Living in sweden were damp and dark are commomplace things I have seen more than a few guns, especially shotgun stock that have grown mold.

Still if it had been dry in the safe, no mold.

I've been using DampRid since the 90's. No problems with mold or rust.

Re: Help Safe rust/ Mold

If you look closely at the rust patterns you can get an idea of why the rust was there i.e. finger/hand prints or a lack of surface oil. Had some carb cleaner overspray go across a pistol laying on the bench one day and a week later there was surface rust where the carb cleaner had dried the oil off the surface of the pistol. Previous posters have all had excellent suggestions.
