I am thinking of having a carbine barrel nitrided and a friend wants to do the same but I have a few questions first. For those that have done it:

Where did you send it/turnaround time/cost?
Did the barrel behave differently afterward?
Should I send in my bolt too?

"might" is an understatement it "will" considering heat treats are done around 400-500 F and the nitride process is done around 1200. the barrel would have to be heat treated afterwards, I would assume whoever is doing the process would already know this issue and do the heat treat as part of the process.

your load data may change in the end, I haven't heard of anyone say it made a barrel worse.

I am just a ME and not a MatE. so I can only comment on what I have been told

    Re: Barrel Nitriding Questions

Well, I emailed blacknitride.com and they said 200$ minimum order charge which seems a little high to me unless they'll do 2-3 for that price. I emailed benchmark but I haven't heard back from them yet.

Anyone know of other places? I thought maybe ADCO but it looks like they do refinishing/contouring/fluting but not nitride.

    Re: Barrel Nitriding Questions

Do not do a AR bolt.

Watch out sending AR barrels to WMD and H&M. There finish is beautiful but they treat at a higher temp and I have had a barrel extension come loose before after being done by one of those companies.

I can get your barrel done for around $85. Now this is if you send just the barrel. If I need to disassemble it it'll be a little more for the labor.

    Re: Barrel Nitriding Questions

its supposedly 70% harder than chrome. big reason why many manufacturers such as Glock nitride many of their parts

    Re: Barrel Nitriding Questions

Nitriding is a waste of time and money unless it is done by the company who manufactured the barrel. It can dramatically alter the hardness/temper of the steel unless it can be done at a temperature less than what the barrel was subjected to when it was heat treated.

here I found the steps of the process listed on Burlington engineering's website:
The system has many stages, from the pre-treatment-cleaning, to pre-heat furnace, to the Melonite salts, quench salts and water rinses.

basically after all the pre stuff its then processed in high temperature salts (1000-1200).
afterwards its quenched in a lower temperature salt (around 300-500 degrees)to establish hardness.
