Making large primer 6.5x47Lapua

Re: Making large primer 6.5x47Lapua

sounds like a good idea. let us know how this goes.

Re: Making large primer 6.5x47Lapua

Just be careful there are no other stress points showing up on the the case, ie case head issues. Never tried anything like that myself...

Re: Making large primer 6.5x47Lapua

You should start over with load development as the larger primer pocket may not handle the same pressure.

Re: Making large primer 6.5x47Lapua

i use LR magnum primers, maybe you should give those a try

Re: Making large primer 6.5x47Lapua

Before doing that you may want to saw one apart and take a hard look at the case head. Changing from small to large primers in rifle cases is a good way to get blown up. You are going to remove metal from the case head. I know the brass is expensive... Have you tried a punch to close the outside of the hole? There are a couple of ways to tighten the hole. If it were me, I would put them in the scrap brass box under the bench.

You can buy more brass or another rifle. You can't re-grow eyes or a head.

40,000 to 60,000 PSI is some tall pressure. Do some thinking before you do anything that can't be reversed.

I couldn't agree more. I get close to 10 reloads out of a case... I think for around $1.06 per case it the best deal going for long range shooting. Once the primer pockets get loose... it's scrap metal recycle.

I'm not saying one way or the other, but if this were dangerous wouldn't we all have blown ourselves up by now with all the other identical .308 based large primer cases? Is there something different with the dimensions of the Lapua case?

Re: Making large primer 6.5x47Lapua

if a case is made for small rifle primers then opening it up for LR primers might remove enough metal to weaken the case head between the primer and webb. a case designed from the get go for LR primers already has this in mind. i would cut one open down the middle and see what hollowing it out will do.

Re: Making large primer 6.5x47Lapua

That could be a one way ticket to disaster' Stay safe Don't try it. MM

I think they call that a 6.5 Creedmoor, Jim

Re: Making large primer 6.5x47Lapua

When my Primers get loose I super glue the primer in and then use it at a "lost brass" match. The other guys in my squad at the Snipers Hide Cup this year thought I was nuts for leaving all my brass behind

Re: Making large primer 6.5x47Lapua

The case webbing around the small primer pocket on the 6.5x47L is notoriously strong and able to be pushed to high pressures. Drilling it out to large primer is going to weaken the webbing and it most likely won't be safe with your current load. If you do decide to drill them out drop 10% and work it up again.
