Just got my rifle home today. The M40A3 is my favorite rifle, but i wanted a larger caliber so, This is for me, my Perfect gun.......I hope!
    Here's the specs,
    338 Lapua
    Surgeon XL action
    24" rock barrel
McMillan A4 built to usmc contract stock specs.
    Schmidt Bender 5-25
Badger usmc rings with simrad cap

Rifle was built by Ben Grigry of Grigry Precision. This is the second rifle he's built for me and I highly recommend his work.
The barrel length.....I struggled with. The blank was fluted for 27" finish, but I really wanted something a little handier especially with a can. I guess I'll see soon enough how much velocity is lost with a 24" tube. Hopefully not too much.
Anyways, I'll have a range report up shortly.
    Cheers,

    Nice build and specs.

What does the overall length measure to with the 24" barrel (from stock to end of brake)?

    Re: A 338 for the M40A3 fans! :)

Looks good, let us know how it shoots

    Re: A 338 for the M40A3 fans! :)

I shoot a 23" 338LM and it does just fine. Ive only taken it out to 1500 so far but with 250's Im about .2 low from what it was with a 27.5" barrel.

That's Great to hear! I'm hoping to shoot to 1750 yards and still be super sonic....may be cutting it close there, but I guess we'll see.
And honestly, 1500 yards is way further than I'm gonna be shooting on a regular basis.
    Thanks,

    Phillip

Have you tried the 300gr Berger Hybrids? You would be surprised at how those fly out of a shorter barreled 338LM....

Yeah, I tried 10 rounds today with H1000. My load was well watered down, below any pressure signs, and I'm averaging 2576fps. Think I can reach 2650 no problem.
Oh, and those bergers shot a 1/4moa 5 shot group @ 100yds. Think I'll keep using them for now.

My ballistic calculator, going off the G7 coefficient tells me @2650fps, I'm supersonic to 1788yds....and that's all I'm ever gonna try with this stick.

Between 3k-4k should get you into a very nice custom 338 platform.

Well, I've been load developing with the 300gn Berger hybrids, but today, I tried several loads with the Sierra 300gn matchking. It has rained all day, so the chrono was out of the question, but I think I may have found a new pet load.

    90.0gn H1000
    Fed 215m

    This is 5 shots @100yds

Yep... I'd say thats a pretty damn good pet load to have!!!

Nice shooting, and even nicer rig!!!

Dude seriously if you ever want or need to sell that just pm me and its a done deal. Coolest 338 I've ever seen.

    Re: A 338 for the M40A3 fans! :)

I'm not meaning to be a jerk when saying this, but how much can you really tell about a load with a .338 at only 100 yards? Shouldn't testing ideally be done at around 300 or so when the bullet is fully stabilized, and in a consistent flight? It just seems like shooting at 100 doesn't really tell you much (it also makes me flinch at $4 rounds being shot at 100 when I can't stand to send $1 .308's at only 100 yards! Haha). I could be completely wrong about this, I was just wondering since some of my friends test their .308 loads at 300 to show how consistent it will be at around 1000 yards, and the .338 is capable of accuracy at much further yardages.

Overall though, you have a very nice rifle!

    Re: A 338 for the M40A3 fans! :)

    remau308,
There is a BIG thread on short range accuracy on the .338 in the beyond 1000 yards section, and I agree with Cory Trapp and Lowlight. A gun that shoots 1.5moa at 100yds, is not going to shoot .5moa at 600yds. The 338 bullet is just as accurate at 100yds as it is downrange. It comes down to the Human Element. For example, concentrating more on a 300yd shot versus a 100yd.
With Bergers, this rifle shot 1moa at 100yds, and 1moa at 900, and 1100.
But I will say, the 338 doesn't make a good choice for bench rest mainly because of the recoil.
Conclusion-if your rifle shoots 1/2moa at 100yds, being that the rifle is built properly, it will shoot 1/2moa at 300yds, and beyond within its effective range.
    Take care,

    Phillip

If you dont mind me asking how much do you have into that? It's a beautiful rifle and i was thinking of getting myself a .338 but the ammo is too pricey for me at the moment
