I am sure that this has been posted before but I can't seem to find it so could someone either (1) point me to the right post or (2) help me out with some original guidance.

I have a R700 SPS tactical in .223 Rem. It is in original condition with the Hogue stock and hinged metal bottom metal plate. I want to upgrade the stock and change it over so that it is magazine fed.

My budget on the stock is $300, which one would you recommend?

What part or parts kit do I need to convert it to being magazine fed?

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical Upgrades

Not much you can do with that. I would look at a Bell and Carlson stock which you can get for 300 ish, but the bottom metal is out. I would save a little more money and then send the stock down to Jeff @ CDI for an inlet and bottom metal

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical Upgrades

CDI is a company that makes a relatively affordable bottom metal. If you send Jeff (owner) the stock he will inlet and install the bottom metal in your stock for a very reasonable price.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical Upgrades

You can typically find a used b&c or hs precision stock for about 220-250. A good dbm system is gonna be another 200 or so depending on what you get. Pacific Tool and Gauge has a good bottom metal for the cheap. Might have to look into getting a inlet job done with most dbm systems, which adds on more cost.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical Upgrades

Take off HS Precision stocks can be found in the for sale area of this website rather often. Other than that, look into Bell and Carlson, they have many good options to choose from. Either of these option will run you around $300.

As for bottom metal... Pacific Tool and Gauge have some wonderful set-ups which won't break the bank.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical Upgrades

Yes as said above. Keep a close eye on the sale section here and other sites. Simplest cheapest upgrade is to an HS Precision take off LTR/PSS/5r stock. The price has gone up a little on them but they can still be found for between $200-250 depending on the seller, model, condtion and if the floorplate is included. Find one w/o the bottom metal and yours will drop right in. After you find a suitable stock give it or have someone give it a skim coat bedding job but it's not "needed" in a lot of cases.

Then save a bit more and hunt down a deal on a decent DBM. It can all be done in steps over a bit of time as budget allows. There's a lot of options regarding these. Most require inletting though so figure this into your hunt when considering costs.

This is a start and after you restock it maybe find a better trigger if you're not hppy with the X-mark. It can all be done on the cheap if you have a little patience & luck.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical Upgrades

I forgot, the bonus to a 223 DBM is the AI magazines are way cheaper!

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical Upgrades

You can buy a BRAND NEW B&C stock for 230 bucks. I recommend the M40 profile stock.

Stick with the bdl floorplate for now.
It works.

Save up your money and get the CDI bottom metal later (total will be about 280 bucks, that is bottom metal and inlet).

It seems you are on a tight budget.
Don't forget to consider the cost of AICS magazines. They are not cheap.
