hi everyone

Im looking to purchase the "SIERRA 5th Edition Rifle & Handgun Manual"

Is this a reloading manual worth buying ? and also does the manuel have listings for the French powder Vectan ?

many thanks

Re: SIERRA 5th Edition Rifle & Handgun Manual

I have the Sierra manual and I like it, lots of good info in addition to the load data. Of course they only give data for Sierra bullets, and they seem to be pretty conservative. I've never seen any listings for Vectan, is it sold under any other names?

I have been checking powder manufacturer websites for data lately. They seem to be updated pretty regularly and if there isn't a listing, you can usually get data by emailing the manufacturer.

my favorite book is always the Lymann. I was going to get the hornady one, but it didnt have all that much info for me (yet i shoot the amax in 308). i have the sierra, but as said above, its really conservative. ive been debating getting the speer.

No. I don't know of any that do.

Did they print info on the 95 SMK for 6mm/.243??? I had a b!tc# of a time finding the sweet spot for my rifle. I have the 4th Edition.

Re: SIERRA 5th Edition Rifle & Handgun Manual

Thanks for the info guys,

The only other name i know of for the french powders is nobelsport.

As im in France (and we live in the stone age) the only 2 brands of powder i can get are the French powder vectan by nobelsport or a swiss brand, Vihtavuori.

As i mainly shoot sierra bullets i think im going to give it a go.

Re: SIERRA 5th Edition Rifle & Handgun Manual

hornady books are REALLY conservative. some start loads on hodgdons site are max loads in the hornady book.

There's not a single US manual that has data for Vectan powders, and I believe I have just about everything that's been published here in the past 40 years. The powder itself isn't seen in the US, so there's no call for reloading data for the powders. They are listed in the QuickLoad files, and data can be generated from this. I can help you on the VihtaVuori powdersl, but you're not going to find anything listed for Vectan on this side of the Atlantic. VihtaVuori, incidentally, is Finnish, not Swiss.

The QuickLoad program is produced by H.G. Broemel, in Germany. I'm afraid I don't have a European contact or distributor for the program, but it shouldn't be too hard to trrack down. The version that I have here is specific to the USA, Canada and Mexico, but includes a good number of EU powders.

Sorry boltgunluvr, completely missed your post. I don't have the manual with me, but I'll check in a few hours when I get home. Are you looking for any particular powder?

Re: SIERRA 5th Edition Rifle & Handgun Manual

I want to see what they're listing as the accurate load for the 95 SMK for 243 Win, what rifle they used for test, twist rate, length, brass brand, primer, COAL, etc. Just want to compare it to what I found that actually works for my rifle. Thx a mil.

Re: SIERRA 5th Edition Rifle & Handgun Manual

The 5th edition skips right from the 90gr FMJBT to the 100gr SPT and SBT. Their test rifle is a 22" 1:9 1/8 Remington using federal brass w/ 210M primers, but no listing for the 95gr SMK. It does show a 2003 copyright date, is the 95 SMK newer than that?

Re: SIERRA 5th Edition Rifle & Handgun Manual

95 SMK is about 2-3 years young. Thx for checking.

Re: SIERRA 5th Edition Rifle & Handgun Manual

hi kevin

thanks for the info, i will get on to that straight away.

Re: SIERRA 5th Edition Rifle & Handgun Manual

Why not contact Sierra directly. They may have tested French powders but did not publish that data since, as Kevin said, French powders are not available in the US.
