I'm going to be putting my Smith m14 mount on my other M14. When I tried it on my full blown NM service rifle it didn't appear the scope rail axis was parallel with the axis of the bore and was offset. Is there a way to make sure everything is lined up straight? Any advice on mounting it. Thanks in advance.

Re: Smith M14 scope mount

Never mounted a Smith but plenty of Sadlaks, I think they are basically the same. Receiver bolt hole could be off spec., machined groove in the receiver can be off spec., side of the receiver could be off spec, also could be the stripper clip guide.

I've had to do this
Level the rifle in a vise, when mounting instal all the bolts where they are snug. If off axis loosen the main bolt and stripper clip slightly and straighten the mount out then tighten the stripper clip guide screw then tighten your main bolt. Sometimes you have to fudge it a little to the opposite direction so that when the main bolt is tightened it pulls it into place. Check the level of the mount.

If this doesn't work contact smith and see if they have any fixes. If not it is dremel time.

Re: Smith M14 scope mount

This won't help with your Smith but if you have an out-of-spec receiver Sadlak has a template: Sadlak Inspection Kit you can use to give them the details on your receiver and they will custom mill one of their mounts to fit.

I love the Smith mount but if faced with an out-of-spec receiver I wouldn't hesitate to go with Sadlak. I'm guessing you could sell the Smith for little if any loss if you needed to go that route.
