Re: new to the forum

Hello Freeport, first I would recommend a full alum bedding Bell & Carlson Stock thru Stocky's Cost about 250. You will be amazed!! Also I have found the Sierra BTHP 168 gr. and 43.5 gr of N150. You won't regret trying this, I am getting 1/4 MOA with this load. Good Luck kiddo!!

Re: new to the forum

Welcome to the Hide. Nice looking gun, much nicer than a lot of us started off with so no need to worry about it being a good starter gun.

Spending money on quality range time and working up loads your rifle likes will pay big dividends over buying lots of expensive goobers to make it look tacticooool.

Find some matches or others near you that are into the long range shooting and that will also shorten the learning curve.

Hardest part when first starting out is not getting impatient, it takes time to become proficient at this game.

Good luck

Re: new to the forum

thanks ya i love my 700 it may not be the best one out there or even close but its mine and im proud of it lol

Re: new to the forum

first off, welcome

there's a ton of information here. if you think it, there's a thread about it most likely. that search engine is your friend.

second, like Topstrap said, find a match. best thing i did was join a F-class league and my shooting has improved considerably the last few months. ymmv

third and final, have fun and enjoy. nothing better than a place full of like minded people... for the most part

Re: new to the forum

Stick with what you've got. Your load sounds just right or very close to ideal for your rifle.

Before you replace anything (i.e., stock, etc.) make sure you actually have a problem that needs to be fixed.

Most stocks, etc. work fine for the majority of shooters, and small mods (like cheek rest pads, or slip-on buttpads to add LOP length)) can resolve most ergonomics issues for those who need tweaks.

Generally, newer shooters do best with very generic gear. It usually takes some time before they can acquire the skills to fully utilize what they have, and to figure out what will actually help them progress; it's not a cut and dried process.

I think that most shooters would benefit from a good, basic .22LR trainer. Something simple and foolproof, that will provide basic reliability and acceptably consistent accuracy. Start simple and cheap, upgrade only when it's clear the present setup is holding you back. The .22LR takes the workload, wear and tear off the .308, is cheaper to keep fed, and reduces shooter fatigue from repetitive recoil. The .308 is not a basher, but all recoil adds up, bigger or smaller.

Welcome and best fortune; and remember, it's your score that's important, not the next guy's. If you're making progress, there isn't any problem.

Greg

Re: new to the forum

Welcome; nice starter rifle practice is everything. If you are reloading you might want to switch to Winchester or lapua brass later on. I've found that the federal brass will wear out quicker. I've had problems with the primers blowing out in the magazine after 3 or 4 reloads.
