I am looking to rebarrel my .308 to a 7mm-08. I was originally think about using a 24" barrel but after seeing the thread on the short barreled .260 it has me thinking about the possibility of going with a 20" barrel. What kind of velocity loss would I be looking at? With the shorter barrel would h4350 still be a good powder to go with or a faster powder work better? I will be rebarreling a LA so I will be able to seat the bullet out further, will the extra case capacity help make up for the barrel loss?

Re: Short barrel 7mm-08?

My son shot a 15" barreled 7-08 his first season at our 1000 yard matches in his XP-100. It did quite well with the 140 Berger VLDs and was getting 2750fps. We found with the shorter barrel the lighter bullet worked very well even on the 1000 yard targets. We tried lots of powders but found 44gr of IMR4064 was the most accurate and gave best velocity in our application.

Good luck

Re: Short barrel 7mm-08?

Thanks for the input. I was hoping the 162gr bullets would still be a viable with a 20" barrel. Any estimate on how much velocity would be lost going from 24" to 20"?

Re: Short barrel 7mm-08?

If i read that correct your using a long action? if so skip the 7-08 and run a 284, in fact i would run a 284 shehane via 22" barrel.

Re: Short barrel 7mm-08?

This rifle will be used for shooting steel and a little hunting. If I were to go with the .284 what would expected barrel life be?

Re: Short barrel 7mm-08?

I run a 140g pill at 2793 in 22" bbl. (no need for a 162 pill in mine) Id figure about 60 fps slower in the 20" max.

Re: Short barrel 7mm-08?

Im building a 7-08 with a 18" barrel. It will be a Rem 700 w/ a rock 1-8.5 twist 5r sendero. Mounted in a MCM a1-a3 and used mainly for hunting but I am sure I will shoot it to distance for fun. I plan on running berger 140 vld bullets and hoping to get over 2700fps out of it. I will also be using a suppressor most of the time so that might help get the speed up a tad. From what I have heard and read a short barrel 7-08 would do great at distance as the bullet choices are high BC and you can push them fast enough to get there. I will find out this spring when my rifle is finished but I shoot a 708 now pushing the 162s at 2725 out of a 26" barrel and this is a mild load as I had them past 2815fps and tamed it down.
