After months of shopping, I was ready to spend the big money on a spotting scope for my long distance work. While a smaller, field spotting scope would have probably been handier, my goal is to use this higher magnification, traditional-sized spotting scope to try and improve my wind reading and bullet tracing skills.

Although I had considered scopes costing three times the price, I kept coming back to these low-cost scopes made by Celestron, essentially for star-gazing and bird-watching activities. I don't know if those markets have a different price structure than the shooting sports, but whatever the reason, the bang for the buck seemed to be much higher than what I could get through the more recognized "shooting-sport" brands.

The decided on the Regal F-ED series, Celestron's flagship model. While these scopes are assembled in China, the lens are Ohara brand ED glass from Japan. And man oh man, does it show! The images are razor sharp from edge-to-edge, and the colors are true to life. The resolving power is also amazing. I was counting 6.5mm bullet holes at 500 meters yesterday, in the rain! And with the huge 100mm objective, my images do not get dimmer at all as I approach maximum magnification.

    <span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-weight: bold">Pros</span></span>

    - Cost ($579) B&H Photo
    - Japanese, ED glass
    - BAK 4 prism
    - 22-67x wide angle eyepiece
    - 20mm eye relief
    - accepts any 1.25" eyepiece
    - 100mm objective, awesome brightness and resolving power!
    - Waterproof
    - No fault lifetime warranty

    <span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-weight: bold">Cons</span></span>

    - size (almost 2 feet long!)
    - weight (5.5 lbs!)

The Slik tripod I bought ain't too bad either. It handles the weight of this bad boy very well, and adjusts from 11" to 62.5". That's enough adjustment for me to use it while shooting prone, or standing on the line while spotting other shooters. For around $120, it' an excellent tripod.

Long story short, if you're in the market for some excellent value on spotting scope glass, consider these Celestron scopes. They also make 65mm and 80mm models if the 100mm model is too intimidating!

In my opinion, they are one of the very best values for well under $1000.

    Cheers mate!
I've always thought about using a non-shooting scope for spotting, since pretty much everything to do with shooting seems to get a manufacturers mark-up.

Re: Celestron spotting scope - two thumbs up!

So, how's the eye relief with that?

Is it really 20mm or does it seem like less?

Re: Celestron spotting scope - two thumbs up!

WOW...and I thought the Pentax 100mm scopes looked HUGE!!

Looks like it'd be nice for use on the range where it only has to get moved/setup from the truck to the firing line, but I sure wouldn't want to have to carry it into the field very far unless I had a trusty pack mule.

Also, that thing sure looks like it'd be longer than 2ft with the eyepiece installed!!

    Hope it serves you well!!

I wear glasses, so longer eye relief is important to me.

Yes, it does feel like 20mm. I have to turn the adjustable eye-cup all the way down, but other than that, I can get a full FOV while wearing glasses. Granted, my lens do touch the rubber eye-cup if I'm not careful.

Re: Celestron spotting scope - two thumbs up!

this one is huge. you could use this to defend yourself if u were to happen to run out of ammo...looks like hell of a spotting scope non the less...comgrats on finding this one

Re: Celestron spotting scope - two thumbs up!

You sure did get you a big one!

Notice any distortion around the edges when shifting powers?

Re: Celestron spotting scope - two thumbs up!

sweet dude looks good! sorta looks like a celestron astrony scope but slimmed down a bit for field spotting.

    price seems ok too...

got anything else to compare it against?

Re: Celestron spotting scope - two thumbs up!

I got a Ultima 80, for a 200 dollar scope it's pretty good, IMHO the glass is better than a Konus but the eye relief sucks compared to the Konus.

The original post is a year old. Big difference there too.

Re: Celestron spotting scope - two thumbs up!

Funny to see this name; I just purchased two Celestron microscopes (same logo on them)...I bought two because I hear they do malfunction frequently and I need one running at all times. At literally 1/5 the price of a Standard B&L microscope and three times the features, worth a trial. We will see how their customer service is...I think that may be a deal breaker for this company.

Re: Celestron spotting scope - two thumbs up!

I've had several astronomical telescopes from Celestron and have had very good luck with their customer service. Had one of their C5's which was mounted on a tripod and it blew over in the wind and broke the front lens. I had this for about 5 years up to that point. Took it down to their shop and they repaired it for me on the spot.

Re: Celestron spotting scope - two thumbs up!

So is the Celestron still a good deal for the money at $749 or are there better options now for the same or less?

Re: Celestron spotting scope - two thumbs up!

It's only $679 at B&H and yes it is from what I've found in my recent searches. If you don't need a reticle and I don't then it's a hard deal to beat.

Re: Celestron spotting scope - two thumbs up!

    "Waterproof"

Yeah, but the eyepiece ain't waterproof, just like all the other of that type, even the best. That's why I bought a Leupold Golden Ring spotter.

    Just sayin'...

Re: Celestron spotting scope - two thumbs up!

It will take whatever standard 1.25" eye piece you want to put on it. If you want to get one that's waterproof and floats knock yourself out.

Re: Celestron spotting scope - two thumbs up!

    Layton,

It's the<span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="text-decoration: underline"> gap </span></span>between the scope and the eyepiece (even a WP one) that is vulnerable. Even with an O-ring it will fog under some conditions B/C id has only atmospheric air in that gap.

Re: Celestron spotting scope - two thumbs up!

Yeah, just messin with ya. Not sure you can do anything about that. But for the price and considering I'll never have to worry about soaking it.

Re: Celestron spotting scope - two thumbs up!

I'm very happy with with my Celestron Regal. I did go with the 65mm model do to the size and weight. The magnification is 12-48 on mine which is a bit less then I wanted. All in all, it's a good scope for the price I paid ($400).
