AR-10 style caliber and bullet recomendation

I'm looking to get an AR-10 style semi-auto.
I'm interested in external ballistics, just punching paper and ringing steel so terminal ballistics are not a priority.
Which caliber and bullet will keep its velocity and buck the wind the most and still fit in the mag?
(I'm considering 243, 260, 7mm-08, and others; I just don't know much about each)

dpms makes a 24" 260 upper with 1in7.5 twist. the review i read says it shoots the 139-140g bullets well. i am trying to talk my uncle into buying the complete upper. that should be the cats meow

At what kind of distances and what type of shooting? Comps or just for fun? Are you willing to pay lots of money for brass and components or do you want it on the cheap?

Do you like a big, heavy, target rifle or do you want a carbine?

How much $$$ you have in your wallet?

Need to answer those types of questions otherwise people here will give recommendations all over the map.

This will be a gun that I'd like to shoot out to 1000, I can't shoot that far yet. I'm learning on my bolt gun now. And then get into comps with the semi, so I think a carbine is out, but I don't want a bench only gun. So something in the middle. Unless people think other wise.

I don't mind spending money on components as long as the return is comparable. Most of the time it's not. So I guess I'm saying is I don't want a wild cat. I don't feel that I need to ring out every fps on this semi-auto. So standard calibers only. I'd take a 260 over the 6.5 creed.

Budget's not an issue I don't mind saving up.

So to refine my question:
Which 308 family cartridge will produce the best external ballistics in a mid-size AR-10.

A friend of mine has a dpms 260 20" and it does pretty well with 123 grain amax. Something like that with a higher quality and perhaps longer barrel might be what you are looking for.
