Why are so many of the shooters here so obsessed with painting their rifles in some sort of camouflage pattern?

If you never use it for hunting, why would you need camouflage?

If you're shooting at game from more than 200 yards away, would it matter anyway?

Just wondering . . .

Is it just more of a "wannabe" thing?

Many shooters notice better accuracy and on average 50fps gain in velocity after getting their paint job just right. If you prefer handicapping yourself by all means keep shooting your tactilame rifle.

It's TACTICOOL dude.

I paint mine for two reason. The main reason is concealment while hunting because I use all my rifles to hunt and until I perfect telepathic communication the critters will come out where they want and see what they want.

The second reason is it's a way of "personalizing" it if you will. Not that I really care what a rifle looks like because they're tools but when I take a rattle can to one it's like I'm marking it as my own. Dog's piss on things to claim them, I paint stuff.

That ought to set things right.


The camo thing with the rifles is kinda like the color of your vehicle.

Some guys don't have the $$$ or don't really care (kinda like the everyday beater car)

Some guys have show cars, race cars, what have you... and they paint them to whatever makes them happy (just like the camo paint jobs on these rifles).

That's my view FWIW.....

Who says I never use my rifles for hunting?

That being said, I doubt an un-camoed rifle will make the difference on a hunt. I'd say the best reason is...because we can.

As I write in this thread I just took apart two rifles to send the stocks off to Short Bus to have them painted. Why - because I can and I like it. No other reasons...just because.

I put a 6" lift with 35's on my truck because I needed it to get to my sniping positions. It would be stupid not to camo my stick.

Cool factor ofcourse.....I love the look of a sweet painted,molded in color, or whatever tacticool colors that are out there.......I got my preferences as do you. You don't like the fact that folks camo their gear, that's on you. I can't stand the flaming F-class rigs with the pink, purple, and neon colors. But hey maybe you do. I usually keep my opinions to myself because it doesn't concern me whether their gear is purple or GAP camo. Its their gear, so who gives a shit. Let em have fun with it.

I personally don't have a firearm that doesn't see the woods, do they need to be camo, maybe not, but for the cost, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside

Then you'll REALLY have trouble because some folks around here are pretty gifted with camo paint jobs so you may not be able to find it when we're done with it!!

Seriously...people do things because they damn well can. Do you need a good reason for every single thing you do? I sure don't. Other people, me included, do it because we actually use our rifles in locations OTHER than on a nice comfy bench at the range and contrary to the intentions of many...we do NOT want our rifles seen in those settings.

I hate to wipe guns down after a outing. Coatings offer many advantages, a rust inhibitor and they just look damn cool IMO. Some of the paint jobs I have seen here are works of art.

Something along these lines..and i do care somewhat about the aesthetics of my rifles if not it would just be a plane jane everyone else's rifle. Part of having "your" rifle is customization and camo adds to that.

Because not 1 of my rifles is camo'd. Unless you consider the factory desert color mix on one of my McMillians camo. Not all of us do it. Most just black, thats camo to me in a way. And not any camo is camo for everthing. Most of mine are cerekoted and they range from grey in OD stock, black in black stocks, dark earth in coyote tan stock, and some blued in the H-S precision spiderwed stocks. Used at distace in grass all stand a hard chance of being seen. I'm not a fan of white stocks and shiney metal, at least not in louisiana. I usually hunt deep in the thick shit looking out. I've had my best luck that way. Sweet potatoe and soy bean fields back home all have the tall thick shit in the sides and thats where I lay up looking at different trails the deer have been using.

I painted my AR because in West Texas, it doesn't get near as hot in the sun as standard black. And it looks neat-o.
