Re: Hogs In New York???

I've heard a lot of rumors floating around about them moving around upstate but so far I haven't come across any pics or real proof. However, there is an article in the DEC hunting regs this year about the 'hog problem' so I guess they are around somewhere

Re: Hogs In New York???

It may sounds fun at first but they are a plague. With any luck you yankees can kill them out.

Re: Hogs In New York???

I heard they were around the eastern adirondacks, but haven't seen or heard of anything being taken so far. They'd have to be some tough piggies to live in that area over the winter. Most of the sightings have been from city folk who've seen pigs that've gotten out of the local farmers pen,or game preserve.I would suspect they'd be more prevelent in the western tier agricultural areas.I've offered to help hunt them on other NY gun/hunting sites, but havn't had any takers.

They are worse than the plague if you are a land owner. Yes they are fun to shoot but they are hard on the land and other wildlife.

Re: Hogs In New York???

Hearing credible reports of them moving West through Binghamton last year, and firsthand reports of swine taken this year from a breeding population East of Seneca Lake on the region (Hector) of the Finger Lakes National Forest.

I live West of Seneca Lake, and nobody's talking about them locally yet. We had a very mild Winter last year, and wildlife populations are up across the board.

NY Feral Swine Habitats Map. Ferals in NY include domestic pig farm escapees, as well a Russian Boar escapees from private instate hunting preserves. There's a large breeding population in North Central PA that is infiltrating Northward into the NY Southern Tier. There's been DEC talk about banning private hunts, but it's already too late for that to do anything effective.

In New York, anyone with a small game license may hunt and keep feral swine year round with no limit. To prevent the spread of disease, wear plastic or rubber gloves while dressing the animal, and bury the offal. Do not feed raw meats or organs to pets or livestock and thoroughly cook the meat before consuming.

Feral swine may be excluded from gardens and domestic hog pens with very heavy duty fencing, but since they can burrow, fencing should be monitored. Domestic swine should be securely enclosed.

Shooting can be used to remove one or two feral hogs, but trapping is recommended for removing family groups. Specially-designed corral traps with heavy metal fencing and mechanical doors are needed to capture free-ranging swine.

When they arrive, they are also a road hazard, their eyes do not reflect headlights like deer eyes do.

Re: Hogs In New York???

Reliable source told me they saw one at a butcher in Delaware county last year or maybe the year before. Don't know whether it was domestic or Russian but, none the less it wasn't where it was supposed to be. FWIW I also hear if domesticated pigs get loose and start to breed it only takes a few years before they start getting the longer course hair and tusks.

I believe there is a preserve in Bethel, NY that does hunts and having had pigs when I was young they are tough to keep in a pen.

Re: Hogs In New York???

There are also 'hunting' preserves in Tioga, PA and Homer, NY that cater to those wanting a wild boar. Pretty sure there are others, but those two come to mind.
I've gotten firsthand reports from someone I trust that had seen wild pig pass through family owned
property in Cortland Co. this spring...

Re: Hogs In New York???

I don't know how far North in NY they are now, but there are definitely wild hog in NY State. I left in 1981 and prior to that encountered families of wild pigs on state land in Dutchess and Orange counties in southeast NY. In those areas where they were, there was already considerable and noticeable damage to the local underbrush.

I was a bit surprised when I saw this thread, since I took it for granted that this was known.

On a side note, here in Florida, there is still a denial of the major negative impact that wild hog have on the environment. Someday I hope that changes, but not so at this time.

I've been saying that for years. =)

My mother claimed to see one on her way home in Oneida county. Been waiting for a repeat sighting....

Re: Hogs In New York???

All over Bradford County, Pa. just south of Binghamton. 6 or 7 years ago my buddy shot a little one on opening day of Pa deer season. It was cold so we hung him till we left to come home. We tied him to the rack of my 4 wheeler in the bed of my pickup truck. We nearly caused several accidents on the NE extension of Pa turnpike on the way home. Pa game commission is begging people to shoot them. Word around the area is that, about 10 years ago, several escaped from a fenced "game preserve" near our hunting property and that the big pigs have been busy making little pigs.

Re: Hogs In New York???

They're here in the Broome/Tioga area, but not like guys in the rest of the country are used to.

Tasty, but a plague we don't want taking root IMO.

Re: Hogs In New York???

That is true:) Should of went back to Arkansas...That's why I say upstate would be so much better off without those over regulating hogs near the city...
