...from the edge of space. And it's on youtube live right now. He's starting around 11:30am (MDT) at the earliest dude to weather.

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

I heard about this, thanks for the reminder. And welcome back, Mike, since your thread is locked. Thought I was banned, for a moment.

Sure, a very high skydive from near space has been done before (actually the guy who did it is on site and is apparently the only one allowed to talk to the new guy on the radio while performing the jump), but this guy is going quite a bit higher, and he's apparently supposed to break the sound barrier in free fall, which the other guy did not do. That would be a first. Also first human to go supersonic without some sort of plane around him/her so it will be interesting to see how the human body handles it.

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

Unfortunately the human body has indeed been supersonic unprotected, and at low level to boot. Supersonic low altitude ejection from an F-15E by Brian Udell, unfortunately the WSO was killed instantly from the forces involved. Hard to imagine for a moment your face being faster than a 45acp LOL. Separated both knees, severe bruising, tore off helmet, mask, shredded life preserver. An absolute miracle he remained conscious, didnt drown, and was able to get into a raft. Story here:http://www.ejectionsite.com/insaddle/insaddle.htm

Supersonic, at that altitude, won't be anything like being supersonic at low altitude. The fact that terminal velocity is higher than the speed of sound is a testament to how thin the air is. It will likely feel just like terminal velocity at low altitude. The difference is, with the higher mach number, his "control surfaces" will be much more effective, and it is possible with poor body position to cause a tumble or spin that could generate centrifugal forces that might not be survivable. A risky jump to be sure if done incorrectly, and potentially lethal in so many more ways than a low altitude jump. But the view he will have will be truly incredible!!

Here is a link to the story of the pioneer of this type of jump, Joseph Kittinger. After these early records he volunteered for three combat tours in Vietnam, incredibly completed over 480 missions, and eventually was shot down and spent nearly a year as a POW. American hero in more ways than one. http://www.centennialofflight.gov/essay/Explorers_Record_Setters_and_Daredevils/Kittinger/EX31.htm

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

Update: says mission will resume in 50 minutes, about 1310 Eastern time. Thanks for the heads up JS I think I will watch this one.

Ill take BoltRipper's place till he arrive...

I did one of those naked once...

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

If Felix Baumgartner falls in a forest, will he hear himself scream?

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

Getting close, almost to 100,000ft!

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

Depressurizing cabin now!

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

'Just watched it on Discovery. Ab-so-fucking-lutely awesome! Really cool how he came out of the spin a few seconds into the fall. 700+mph. Landed on his feet. Felix is the man. SR

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

At that altitude 700+ mph should be enough for Mach 1, guessing at his altitude after 30 sec or so, i figure he reached somewhere around 1.08Mach

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

"Who's yer daddy?"

I'm too sexy for my pressure trousers.

<span style="color: #FF0000">According to the article below the balloon skin was only as thinc as a drycleaning bag. I would nave been afraid that at about 1000ft., with no way to exit or parachute, a nearsighted bird would have flown though it.

ROSWELL, New Mexico (Reuters) - An Austrian daredevil leapt into the stratosphere on Sunday from a balloon flying 24 miles above the planet in an attempt to break the sound barrier.

Cheers broke out as Felix Baumgartner, 43, jumped from a tiny shelf outside the 11-by-8-foot (3.3-by-2.4 meter) fiberglass and acrylic capsule that was carried to 128,000 feet by an enormous balloon.

"We love you Felix!" screamed the crowd as he plunged through the stratosphere.

"My visor is fogging up," he gasped over the radio and he fell through the air moments before his parachute opened to the applause of the crowd on the ground, including his teary-eyed mother, father and girlfriend, watching on monitors miles below.

He landed about 10 minutes later, having broken the world record for the highest altitude jump by a skydiver, sponsors said.

As he prepared to jump from the pressurized capsule, Baumgartner went through a checklist of 40 items with project adviser Joe Kittinger, holder of a 19-mile high altitude parachute jump record that Baumgartner hopes to smash.

He checked through an equipment list from his seat and expressed concern that his astronaut-like helmet was not heating properly.

"This is very serious, Joe," said Baumgartner as the capsule, designed to remain at 55 degrees Fahrenheit ascended in skies where temperatures were expected to plunge below -91.8 F (-67.8 C), according to the project's website. "Sometimes it's getting foggy when I exhale. ... I do not feel heat."

Baumgartner's ascent into the stratosphere took about 2 1/2 hours.

<span style="color: #FF0000">The 30 million-cubic-foot (850,000-cubic-metre) plastic balloon, is about one-tenth the thickness of a Ziploc bag, or roughly as thin as a dry cleaner bag.

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

How did he get into that space suit with balls that big? Seriously...

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

I was glued to the tv watching the event. Fantastic how Joe Kittinger had such a big part in the program. That's paying homage to your predecessor.

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

the whole thing was pretty impressive. he was spinning like mad at first then finally got stable. good to see Kittinger on the coms passing the torch

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

^^^^^^^^^^Beautiful shot of the Rio Grande snakeing along the front range. The first steps a long one.

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

man watched the live feed i think it was pretty awesome, he hit 700+mph wow thats some balls. my hat is off to you sir!

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

Do you think Area 51 was watching? This guy is awesome no one
has done anything like this in the Mdern era of iphones video
games.we needed this.

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

Felix is an amazing human being. I don't know many people that would have the balls to do that.

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

Can you imagine how big of a deal Kittinger's jump was in 1960? He went up in a gondola, not a capsule. Imagine the difference in technology back then, too.

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

Considering that just 60 years ago, it was termed "the sound BARRIER," today pretty much smashed the last myth surrounding it. He didn't get torn limb from limb and according to him, he couldn't even feel the difference.

Official numbers were 833.9 mph, Mach 1.24.

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

Totally bad ass. Got a bit hairy (it seemed) when he went into that spin but he managed to adjust himself.

Wonder what kind of camera or optic they were using to track him from the ground.

One of the pressure gloves on Kittingers suit failed during the ascent on his jump. His hand blew up twice its size as the blood pooled in his hand. He refused to tell the flight surgeon via radio link because he didnt want the jump scrubbed.

I guess having a hand twice normal size is convienient to handle balls so big.

If you watch the raw video of Kittingers jump during his recovery on the ground note that one of the ground guys gets right in his face and flips him the bird. I can only imagine the reason for this -

Kittenger to ground guy - "Hey joker, that was almost as fun as when I was banging your mom."

These are certainly manly men, no PC chickenshit.

If you mean that black line in the middle of the frame, that is an escarpment (sort of a ridge line) not a river. The Rio Grande is well southwest of Roswell.

Infrared for most of it. Here are the specs: http://www.redbullstratos.com/technology/cameras-communications/

Re: This guy is about to do a supersonic skydive

NatGeo channel is showing a two hour special on it. More of a behind the scenes type thing. It'll be on again on the 16th and the 18th.
