I'm going to rebarrel and change the recoil lug on one of my rifles so I need to rebed the stock. When I remove the bedding material in the lug area is it ok to just use a dremel? I dont have a mill or anything really precise to do it with. This is the first time I've ever removed bedding material.

Re: Re-bedding a stock

I did the same thing to a rifle a few years ago. I only removed the bedding in the area that needed to be removed, barrel and lug area. I used a dremel and roughed up the area where I removed the old bedding. Be careful not to get the new bedding material on the area you are not changing. You also want to use some type of dust mask removing bedding is a dusty job.
Good luck with your project.

Remember, if you grind too much...it can be rebedded. If you grind too little, ugh. I am not a Dremel too fan as we have several mills, but it is in your best inrerest to grind enough for a new bedding job. Flame suit on

Absolutely agree with this. I take most of the old bedding off in the mill, then dremel to take (most of) the rest and give the new bedding something to bite too. You don't go crazy with the dremel and dig a hole. This is when I fit the receiver for rebedding always keeping in mind where you want it to finish.
