The fucked up part is that it is true in a way.
Short story: I lost this bet to this guy, I guess he used the opportunity while I was drunk so he made me arrange it thru a close friend of mine who happen to specialize in camo painting rifles. His shitty rifle delivered usually 2-2 1/2 MOA and now when he got this paintjob done - 1 1/2 MOA. So, psychology and mindset is powerful :p

Re: Camouflage - - - Why?!?!?!

Stupid people do stupid things.

If they don't have a logical justifiable reason for it, they'll say things like:

Why not?
Because I can
Because I feel like it
Because it's cool
Because it looks cool
Fuck you

Not everyone realizes the level of their stupidity, it's a relative opinion. Street trash do a lot of things & use the above reasons as justification. Most of us know that taking a TV out to the range, shooting it up and making a mess while displaying a piss poor example of recreational shooters is not cool. However there are those that think it is all kinds of cool.

If you went into a street trash car forum and asked why people put $4000 chrome 22" wheels on a beater car, you'll get the exact same set of answers.

Why not?
Because I can
Because I feel like it
Because it's cool
Because it looks cool
Fuck you

If you went to the lowest ranked high school around and asked the punk kids why they wear chains, have all kinds of piercings, and smoke all kinds of homemade drug combinations, you'll get the exact same set of answers.

Some people have a desire to look like a retard and paint a Punisher skull on their guns. Those people will probably be offended by this post, while those of us with couth think it's an embarassment to the entire sport and industry.

Now, all that is completely exclusive from people who legitimately camoflage a firearm for a specific advantage. If you can't figure out which examples are which by yourself, you probably don't even comprehend what I just said.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic but if you've never seen the show, watch a couple episodes or check the thread in the Movie Theater. They charged a guy something like $2,800+ to convert an old walnut 870 into a home defense shotgun.

On topic, yes, I do it because I can but there's some practical reasons. Put a black stocked rifle on the firing line in 102* heat for 20 minutes then get down and stick your cheek to it.

Re: Camouflage - - - Why?!?!?!

I don't think this is true at all. Many of the McMillans have a very tasteful marble color. Several of the HS Precisions have a decent looking webbing design (a notable exception for me is the seafoam green webbing on black that comes with the 5R stock). Many people have solid color stocks that look good when there is a contrasting tone with the barrel finish. Not too many of the chassis rigs I see have a cammo pattern.

I don't see the "obsession" you mention.

Re: Camouflage - - - Why?!?!?!

And on to the molded-in thread...

Mostly I just hate anything shiny.

Re: Camouflage - - - Why?!?!?!

cause this is 'merica...

People paint their rifles for plenty of reasons. Personally I do it for the same reason I toss morale patches on my gear. At a shooting match or even just a busy range day its nice to be able to look down the line and see your gun or just see the mysterious patch of grass in the middle of the desert... As others have said its a nice way to mark your gear and if it ads a little cool factor who cares.

And on a side note it proves my penis is epic huge...

^Doesn't know how to use a rattlecan. I'll help. You have to simultaneously pinch both ribbed portions of the cap and slowly pull until it breaks free but not before you shake the can vigorously for 2 minutes(that's 120 mississippi's) THEN you look for the hole thing in the sprayer mechanism. To ensure it's functioning properly, hold it roughly 3 inches(that's your penis size if you're having trouble following) from your right eye and press the tab opposite the hole. If you feel a stinging, burning sensation, then the unit is defective and you should contact your doctor and kill yourself immediately to avoid serious injury or procreation.

That's it! Now camo your rifle and join the cool kids club! We have cake.

Re: Camouflage - - - Why?!?!?!

Why drive a pickup when a compact car gets you Point A to B?

Why have an iPhone when an old Moto RAZR works just as well to talk?

Why own a 3500sq ft home when a married couple and two kids can get by just fine on 1500sq ft?

Why shoot a 260 or 7-08 when the 308 works just fine for the military?

Why ask why?

Like most any possession, a rifle is a possession very suitable for customization...or rather, personalization. A paint scheme (be it camo or whatever) is simply another way to personalize what is yours.

Re: Camouflage - - - Why?!?!?!

Why black? Is there a reason a rifle needs to be black? Does black shoot better than any other color? Does it look less menacing than another color? Does it look more menacing than any other color? Does an ordinary black rifle show you as a "serious marksman". I suppose we should all think like Henry Ford when it comes to rifles, "they can have any color so long as its black". Seriously, who cares?

I have one rifle that isn't basic black. The stock is a MCM with molded in desert camo. I am not very good with a rattle can, but I have no issue with those that are. People have been painting objects for a long time to personalize them. I can go into a hardware store and find different colored tools, why would a rifle be any different?

We all have varied tastes, its why they make chocolate and vanilla icecream. I can think of more reasons why a rifle shouldn't be black than I can why it should be black. Yet, the only rifle I have at home that I have bothered to take a rattle can to, is black.

Its a Marlin 2000 .22. It came with an obnoxious blue stock. I hated the color from day one but let the armorer for my PD talk me out of painting it from the first month I had it. I lived with that obnoxious blue stock for 10 years, before giving in and painting it black. I wish I had done it 10 years ago. I kept asking myself "Why blue?" I am sure it appealed to a market somewhere.

You ask "why camouflage?" I am sure its because its owner prefers that color to black. For me personally, the reason I choose a MCM stock with MCM desert camo molded in was strictly sentimental. I don't really like that particular combination, but that was the color of my first issued sniper rifle, a MCM M86. I built a custom rifle heavily influenced by that rifle. I suppose I "wannabe" remembering that M86 when I shoot M86ish build.

My current issued sniper system is black. It gets hot quickly here in Iraq. It stands out and creates a very distinctive profile. I find myself asking "Why black?" Why not a nice cool tan or some lighter shade that would not get so hot and blend a little better, but I am not allowed to paint or alter it in anyway, because somewhere there is someone saying "They can paint their rifle anyway they want, so long as its black"...."Why black?"

Re: Camouflage - - - Why?!?!?!

1. I can

2. standard anodizing and stainless shows up like a freaking beacon when hit with a little light and viewed under NODS.

3. I prefer to blend in when I'm laid up on a ridge line looking for hogs/yotes/ect.

4.Everyone owns a black rifle now days. many own several... I want to be different, and not "hey look how I arranged my magpul XTM covers into a camo pattern" different. I want my kit to look like no one else.

5. When I drag my kit through the mud/dust/dirt, over rocks, and through rivers and lakes, its going to get scratched up. It's a hell of a lot easier to spray some touch up Krylon on it than it is to buff it, polish it, strip it, or refinish it.

Re: Camouflage - - - Why?!?!?!

same reason put 24 inch rims on a car worth 300 bucks lol.

ok maybe not exactly but same principle

How many Remington 700 AAC-SDs are on this site with a B&C stock?

probably a lot more than i can count.

people don't want to go to the range and see someone sitting next to them shooting the same exact gun every single time.

so people pain their rifles to express something called individuality. if i saw a remington 700 at the range i most likely would just go "oh cool another remy". if i see one with a nice paint job or some custom touches i take a second look.

also is helps against the elements as some have already mentioned. as far as a "wanna be" goes. does anyone really have the need to shoot out to 1000 yards. are they a "wanna be" for doing so. i have met many civilian shooters who can out shoot more than a few of the snipers i knew while i was in the marines.

being a sniper isn't all about shooting. its about a lot more than that and the civilians I've net that can shoot most likely wouldn't be able to handle the stress of combat much less the stress of being a sniper. since i am a veteran but wasn't a sniper does it make me a "wanna be" for painting my rifle even though i painted my M4 with Krylon on my last 2 deployments to iraq. i didn't know paint alone made you any more special on the battlefield except for concealment and protection purposes.

anyway people are people. i see little need in spending time caring about what others are doing unless i see it as a threat to my family or myself.

Re: Camouflage - - - Why?!?!?!

I've done a lot of tinkering with guns over the years because I enjoy it. I've applied Duracoat to a few guns, two of them with camo patterns, and looking at the end product (especially for someone like me with ZERO artistic ability) was one of the most fun and gratifying projects I've tackled. When asked by my wife why I needed to order six different colors of Duracoat I responded with "It allows me to be tactically creative, it's like scrapbooking for men."
