Well, this isn't his first buck but his best. This was the best hunt I have ever been on in all the years I have been in the field. When I have more time I will go into better detail but I just have to post this one up on the Hide.
20ga H&R youth hv rifled slug gun
Hornady 3" 250gr SST
APA ported the barrell to reduce recoil
Limbsaver recoil pad
IOR 4x14 lit mp8 ret.
And most important a 4 1/2yo 142" 10pt at 120yds smoked!!!
All this = 2 happy chumps!!!
I was invited to bring my son up to Illinois Connection for the 2 day youth season. I was so jacked up and broke the news to the wife and it did not go as I thought it would. He was going to have to miss two days of school and that didn't fly with momma. Long story short we were going , Grin!

I did some research and ordered a H&R HV rifled youth model slug gun. The gun comes in and I immediately take it to Jered at APA to get it ported so it would help reduce the recoil. Picked up a Limbsaver recoil pad while it was at APA. Jered knew I needed it done quick and he got it done in a week. That was on Thursday a week before we leave to go on the hunt. Came home that night and mounted the IOR scope. On Saturday I had it dialed in at 75yd zero and shot it thru the chrony at a whooping 1500fps.

The best part is my son has no idea as its going to be a surprise. Everything is ready to go so Thursday I broke the news to him that we were leaving at 4:30 the next morning. Needless to say I got the best Dad ever award. So we're there and not much happened on the first three hunts. On the last hunt it all changed as you can see.

Well we went to a shooting house around 2:30 and got settled down. To add to this my son has a cold with a nasty cough so I kept an extra jacket for him to cough into. Back to the stand, somewhere around 3:00 four deer entered the food plot and it just got better from there. More deer filtered in and around 5:00 a 100" 8pt started sparing with a 6pt. They turned it up a notch and had all the other deer watching them. Things were settling down.

With all the excitement going on the 10pt came into the plot at about 5:30 at around 150yds. I wanted him to get within 125yds and he's making his way to us. After about ten minutes he gets to 130yds, he looks at a doe and she looks at him. All of a sudden she takes off and he takes off after her running her out of the plot. So about 5min later she comes back and starts feeding again. Another 5min goes by and guess who struts back in the plot in back around 130yds still.

It's all I could do to contain my son. The buck starts making a scrape in the plot. He's raking up clover and its going over the height of his back. Then takes a good long piss and looks around and wants to know who wants some of this. Finally he was making his way in and gets broadside at 120yds. My son starts telling me to "cock it, I got him daddy, cock it!" He's sitting up in my lap with the gun cocked and before I can tell him to take his time and squeeze the trigger, Bam! The buck does a face plant and starts driving out of the plot with his back legs. My sons shot had takin out the front running gear and pump station. The deer only made it about 20yds just out of the field.

I forgot to mention that I had to dial it up 3 moa elevation for 120yds and it was spot on. He had shot the deer dead up in the front shoulder and the bullet ended up between the far side shoulder and the skin. Just to say the least we were all grins! I'll let the pics explain the rest. Oh yea, did I mention I got the "Best Dad Ever"!!!

Re: My 8yo sons IL youth hunt (Graphic!!!)

This was a Illinois youth hunt. A good friend of mine invited my son up for the two day youth hunt. If you ever want to go to IL look up Doug Benefield owner of Illinois Connection. During this two day hunt he had 8 kids all but 1 pulled the trigger and the other kid saw a shooter just not in range.
More details to come tonight thanks for all the kind words.

Re: My 8yo sons IL youth hunt (Graphic!!!)

Outstanding deer! I hope that i will be as lucky this year.

Started taking my nephews hunting a few years ago and it really has added a whole new angle to hunting for me. Thanks for passing it on to the next generation.

Damn! Now that's what I'm talking about. Your 8 year old son has just made every deer I've ever shot look pathetic. Can't wait till my boy is old enough to go out with me.

Re: My 8yo sons IL youth hunt (Graphic!!!)

If you see the little tuff of hair ruffled on his shoulder just to the left of the scope, that's the slug sitting there
