I took apart my bolt and firing pin on my remington 700 and it appears to have a thick grease on the spring like a lithium or something? Is there a certain type of gun grease that you guys suggest for this??

Was this new or used? From the factory they should not have any grease in the bolt body, often there is a dab of grease applied to the threads of the bolt shroud threads, but that is it.

Hum, two different comments.
Ok guys thank you but please clarify.
The bolt had no grease on its externals.
When I unscrewed it apart, the threads AND the spring itself were heavily coated with a darkish grease that resembled the consistancy of Lithium.
I just did not know if this is normal and what is called for inside the bolt like that. This is a used gun that I just bought recently from someone so I had not lubed it previously.
thanks, mike

Sounds like someone packed it full of god knows what. My choice is to use a light oil for rust prevention, the firing pins and springs are prone to rust otherwise.
Using a thick heavy grease can slow down lock time in the cold or if it gathers 'stuff' it becomes a great glue. I have pulled apart many a department owned and fielded rifles only to find interesting things have worked their way into the bolt body.
I have read/heard the grease no grease arguments and personally don't go much further than a dab on the cocking piece and shround threads. It didn't leave he factory like that.

If this has the old J-lock safety bolt shroud Remington lubed everything well with a moly grease because the spring was bound up inside the bolt body.

All good points guys, say, how would I now if mine if the old J-lock type??? LOL

Re: what is this greese used on the spring??

The brand-new R700 that I bought about a year ago had an obscene amount of grease packed inside the bolt straight from the factory. Like the OP's rifle, it appears to be some sort of lithium compound.

The proper lubrication will depend on the environment in which the rifle is used. Cold conditions would call for some sort of relatively thin oil, or else you may find that the grease thickens to the extent that it affects firing reliability. Wet conditions would call for thick oil or grease. Dry conditions may favor a dry lubricant.
