Easy way to verify a 5R?

I found what looks to be a used 5R in .308 with the 24" barrel for sale. They are not advertising it as a 5R and when I asked them if it had the 11.25 twist 5R rifling they seemed to have no idea what I was talking about. I couldn't find markings on the barrel other than the OE date code so it should be July of 2010 if I'm right. It has a S6738XXX serial number. Is there any easy way to tell if it's actually a 5R or not? If so, they're asking $850 for it, think it's worth it or should I just save for a new one that I can be sure about?

Re: Easy way to verify a 5R?

Is it stainless steel in a greenish colored HS Precision stock?

As far as I know, but I could be mistaken, the 5R is the only heavy barrel .308 they make with a 24" barrel.

Just to be sure, call Remington. If they verify that it is, run, don't walk back and buy that sumbitch. 850 is a steal.

Re: Easy way to verify a 5R?

Why not count how many rifling lands there are in the barrel?

Re: Easy way to verify a 5R?

count the rifling at the crown. there should be 5 lands

Mine did not, Remington verified the serial number for me.

Re: Easy way to verify a 5R?

Does it actually matter if its a 5R or not? Probably not. Buy, shoot, shoot some more, when its worn out, have somebody reputable put a new barrel on it and true the action.

X1

The stock should have a very apparent palm swell ( if you don't know what a HS precision stock looks like) mine does not say 5r on it.....it shoots lights out. Buy it..try to talk them down first, but have $850 in you pocket

Seeing as theres a pretty significant difference price wise... I'd say it matters alot!

My 5r out shoots all of my regular Rem rifles and some of my customs..yes it does matter

Re: Easy way to verify a 5R?

The 20" has 5R written on the barrel, the 24" does not. Both have 5R milspec rifling written on the factory box. And I'd say it does matter as well, My 1st group with 168 SMK's was .172". I have now shot the whole box some at 100, and some at 200yd, and my worst 100yd group was .466", and worst 200yd was .877"

Dude, you need to do a target if your WORST group is .466"! You'll kick EVERYBODY'S ASS!

You only managed a .172? Weak!! Mine shoots .171!! Haha!

I usually round up to the nearest tenth unless it's incredibly close to the lower one. Guess I'm a crude bastard. Oh, well...

Re: Easy way to verify a 5R?

drop the bolt out hold it up to the light and look at the rifling at the muzzle

Front lawn, and target. If you wanna see, go to Hickory egg shoot. If you have never saw a rifle shoot in the .1's at 100yds, i have a cpl I'd like you to shoot
wink.gif

Oh and btw, I suck at shooting, last egg shoot I finished 13th out of 140+ shooters. My 100 was great, but my 300, and 500 were smoked by the older guys who actually know what they are doing. Ease up, when someone at the range gets a good group, I usually give him a fist bump or "way to go" I never get pissed off. ???
BTW I just use a mititoyo digi dial caliper, measure outside, subtract bullet dia. Not exact, but it's within putting a smile on my face.

Re: Easy way to verify a 5R?

Thanks for the info guys. I don't know why I didn't think to just see if it was 5 or 6 groove when I had it in my hands on Sunday morning and I would have drove back to count but I had to run out of town. Of course I know what a HS stock is, and I thought it was greenish, but I'm colorblind so what do I know. Anyway, the only reason I really had doubt is because the 20" rifles I was looking at had it marked on the barrel, this is the first 24" one I looked at so I was thrown off, thanks for clearing that up. Also, I called Remington with the serial number, verified! I called the owner, they wouldn't come down on the price but they are holding it for me for when I get back into town. Needless to say, it's going to be a good weekend. Thanks for the help and advice guys. Now it's just trying to decide between the McMillan a4 or a5 . . . and of course "enjoying" the HS while I save for one.

It's just 1 box of SMK's and it actually did impress me. My Custom rigs shoot .1's, and I have $4-$5k invested. I'm sure I'll shoot worse groups, but if my gun won't shoot .7's or better, they go out the door as fast as they came in. Took me a lot of guns off the shelf, before I realized none of them would do it consistently, then after my BAT came back from Clay Spencer in 6br, I knew what consistent meant. Good days, and Bad.

I wasn't calling into question whether or not you have a good shooting rifle, or if you yourself can shoot well.

I was however, calling into question the ability to distinguish a .171" group from a .172" one.

Sorry...I see it all the time around here and your post was the one that made me speak up...

Nice shooting.

Re: Easy way to verify a 5R?

Looks like three rounds. Stretch it to five, do it six times, and be at the top of the leader board.

Re: Easy way to verify a 5R?

Very true. I never shoot 3 shot groups, but when the ole factory rifle put 3 into one, all I could do was mess it up,lol. Just trying to get my range ready to sight the whole towns "deer guns" in, before we scare em all away. Shooting other peoples guns more than mine lately, just had a guy drop off a 338 Lapua Savage BA and a 5.5-22 NF, and rings to set up. All this to take down a whopping 90lb Whitetail at no more than 200yds. Smallest gun I have here is a 30/06, and anymore I dread shooting those, after the 6BR's, and PPC's that I own.

He'll be all set when the deer are stacked 2 and 3 deep - one shot and take 'em all out.

They sure are! Here in WI there's a guy with a Barret in .50 BMG for his deer rifle. Keep in mind most of our shots are taken at 50 yards or less in the woods . . . I'd be surprised if he's ever gotten anything with his Barret, it'd be pretty hard to go prome and acquire target with that in a 50 yard environment.

Drop it hell. It'll make it disappear.

Re: Easy way to verify a 5R?

I used my .35 Whelen last year and it dropped them no faster than my .280 AI. This year I'm thinking about using an AR.

Re: Easy way to verify a 5R?

Love using my AR's to deer hunt. I have a few 6.8spc's, in 16" and 18" and they work great. My lil 16" brrl, shoots Barnes TSX 3000+fps, and so far I haven't had one take another step. I'm sure I will though. Seems the average around WNC is a 7mm Mag. When stand hunting my farthest shot in NC was a whopping 111yds. But I have hunted from another ridge, to a bait pile that was 400+yds with my 6mm, shooting off a table, or truck hood.

Re: Easy way to verify a 5R?

Barnes makes one heck of a game bullet, lmk how they shoot, never tried the 70's, I been lookin em over, just haven't loaded any yet.
