Larue PredatAR 7.62! Any experience or opinions?

I want a Larue 7.62 and really would prefer to get an OBR but hard to find. My ultimate goal would be the PredatOBR which has the OBR barrel but about a pound lighter than standard OBR. A shop close to me has a brand new Pradatar 7.62 but i am a little concerned with the different barrel and profile they use for this setup. I have not found any decent reviews on the PredatAR 7.62 to see how this barrel or setup performs. All inputs appreciated.

What are you looking to do with the rifle?

The OBR and yet to be shipped PredatOBR are meant as semi-auto precision rifles, while the PredatAR is meant as more of a hunting/battle type rifle.

I definitely would not want to give up on the accuracy or precision when dropping $2800 for an AR. I think a 16-18" OBR or yet to be produced PradatOBR can be both battle and precision type rifles depending on how they are setup. I just didnt know how the Pradatar performs in the precision role?

Re: Larue PredatAR 7.62! Any experience or opinions?

I would say if you think you might use it deer hunting or dragging thru the woods, with punching holes in paper here and there, then I would get the predatAR..

If just punching holes in paper for target practice / bench rifle and 100% precision is your goal, then I would stick with just the OBR.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but the OBR has a built in cant for optics where the predatAR does not. If you want that option on the predatAR, then you would just need to purchase a 20moa cant optics scope mount of some sort.

Someone else might want to chime in here.

The barrel profile, rail cant, trigger (Geissele SSA in OBR and S2S in PredatAR), and adjustable gas block are the main differences.

The cant would not be a show stopper for me as you can get a variety of mounts with cant built in. The S2S trigger supposedly feels very much like an SSA trigger and I haven't heard of folks complaining about it, and it would also be easy to replace.

The thinner barrel profile should be just as accurate as the heavier OBR profile until both barrels heat up. That is where I would expect the OBR to have an advantage as the lighter barrel would be more likely to have a POI shift when hot or with a suppressor hanging off of it.

The adjustable gas block is nice to have when using a suppressor, but if you won't be shooting with a can, it really won't matter.

So I would base my decision on whether you plan to be doing extended strings of fire from the bench and if you going to be using a suppressor.

I got my OBR a month ago and love it. It is a little heavy for packing through the woods but the sub 1/2 MOA is amazing. If your going to be hunting with it, just setup over a large field and snipe whatever dare come out in the open. You may want to go with a shorter barrel to save a little weight, I went with the 16".

LaRue seems to be making some great stuff.. but I'm hoping to get my hands on a F&D soon!

Re: Larue PredatAR 7.62! Any experience or opinions?

I have 2 OBR's Both 18 inch

5.56 and 7.62

I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Both 1/2 inch guns easy....

Re: Larue PredatAR 7.62! Any experience or opinions?

I have two PredatAR's. One in 5.56 and one in 7.62 both 16'ers. I have had the 556 for about two months and just received my 762. I have shot the 556 to 600yds and can hold 1.5 MOA. I am not the best shooter with the AR platform but I just shot an NRA across the course match (200yds,300yds,600yds) 110 rounds total for a max score of 1000points and 100x"s, I scored a 817points with 7x's. This was done with a 16"bl light contour no bipod, sling and jacket only, first time I've ever shot something like this. I do not think there is that big of a difference in the heavy contour barrel or the light as far a shooting is concerned but, carring the weight is a different story.I've heard all the storys about barrels heating up with a POI change. I believe that a person should be more concerned with "driving the gun right" and reading the wind then a minuscule group change. Sorry off the subject. I have not shot the 762 as it has not been scoped (waiting on funds). I've shot the 556 at P-dogs out to around the 550yd mark and in with a 75% hit ratio.

I love my new rifles!! I look forward to getting better with them.I hope this helps you but, ultimately you have to decide what will work for you

Good luck.

I have a 762 PredatAR, my friend has a OBR, side byside at the range its not noticeable of the LW barrel. granted we were not running mag after mag after mag. I prolley put 8 mags thru it in a couple hours.??
I"m pickin my SF762K up this week. we'll see how it does with a can hanging on it.

Re: Larue PredatAR 7.62! Any experience or opinions?

If you speak with support at LaRue they will say the 7.62 OBR is "typical 1/2" and the PredatAR is "typical 3/4." Eflster and 50APIT are on the money with the advice. Will be good to see more targets posted for the PredatAR. For the weight seems like a great rifle. The good news is either way, you will have an excellent rifle.

Re: Larue PredatAR 7.62! Any experience or opinions?

The PredatAR is also approx. $500 cheaper over the OBR. You could put those savings into your optics. You might be happier that way. I went with the OBR because of the switch gas block, but I got mine right before the prices went up.

I bet it's looking sharp with that USO 1.8-10x SN-3s on it!

A buddy of mine from work received his 7.62 PredatAR a few weeks back. He sent me a cell phone picture of a <1" 5 shot group that he did with 168 gr FGMM at 300 yards. He is really enjoying his PredatAR.
