300 win mag neck size bushing question

Please help.

I have a 300 win mag, and I need to tighten the necks on the brass. This will be the 3rd loading on the brass. I ordered a .336 bushing, installed it, and it did nothing. So what the hell do I do now. I looked on midway and they have a 308 bushing. Can I use this bushing in my 300 win mag. It is the same bullet. And it states that it is for the gold medal match dies, and that is what I have.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Paul

Re: 300 win mag neck size bushing question

Measure the neck diameter of a loaded round, and subtract approximately .002-.003 for starters for neck bushing diameter.

I recommend that you anneal your brass and try resizing again. Depending on the quality of your brass, you might have to do this more often than you'd like. Also, neck thickness can vary a great deal between brands of brass so knowning how thick your neck actually is will be key to solving this problem.

Re: 300 win mag neck size bushing question

What dies are you using? I just started loading for the .300, and like you I got a set of the dies that use a bushing. I also have a traditional full length sizer die (all reddings). Since I was starting with new brass I used the traditional full-length sizer in an attempt to make all of the cases as consistent as possible prior to being fired. After full length resizing I went to run them through a neck sizer to begin to play with the tensioning. I found that my standard full length resizer was leaving the cases at around .333 neck diameter (with remington brass). My loaded rounds with 190 SMK are around .334/335 and the 208 AMAXs are .335. I didn't turn the necks. So you may want to drop down a few sizes.

Re: 300 win mag neck size bushing question

In my 308 using WIN brass, I need/use a 332 bushing for the second sizing operation on the neck. I use a 338 bushing as the first sizing (obturated diameter of 0.3445)

With Lapua brass the bushing should be about 334.

So, I think you need a smaller bushing.

If you have any loaded ammo from the same set of cases, measure the outside diameter in 3-4 places take the average, subtract 0.002 and see if you don't get closer to 332-334.

try a lee collet die. i to played the bushing game, unless your neck turning you may have better luck. i'm getting less then .001 run out with it.
yes it sucks the high dollar die just sits on my bench but the numbers don't lie.
