Can a model 12 be converted to a magnum? I have a model 12 repeater target action in 260 and love it. I came across another like it and would like to swap it over to a 300 win mag if it is possible. I had been told the model 12 was between a short and long action? Is this a possibility by changing bolt face and barrel? What about factory dbm?

Re: Savage model 12LRP caliber change question

Savage short action IS longer than a Remington short action, but not long enough for the win mag.

Why would you want to go from the .260 to the .300 WM, exterior ballistics are VERY similar with far less recoil and barrel wear with the .260.

Unless you are hunting game, there is NO reason to switch.

Re: Savage model 12LRP caliber change question

Not switching what I already have. Found one for sale and thought about changing it because I like the one I have so much. Would a short magnum case work in the original mag? This would be for hunting. I could always have two of the same gun if things don't work out with a change over!

Re: Savage model 12LRP caliber change question

A WSM will work in a short action. You would have to switch mags and bolt-heads, but other that all is good. You might be able to tweak the feed lips on the mag, but I don't know for certain.

I would suggest a 7mm WSM, both for hunting and another, different long-range rifle.

Re: Savage model 12LRP caliber change question

Been tossing 7mm and 300 around in my head. I have taken deer with the 260 out to 625 yds with the 130 bergers but want something with more energy further down range. Was leaning towards 7mm mag or 7mm wsm and then hear the 230 bergers were game changers for the 300 from other shooters? But, if I go 300 wsm route the heavier bullets become a problem right?

Re: Savage model 12LRP caliber change question

In a short action, and you want to mag-feed, yes the heavies really it slow it down. I shoot a 300 WSM, with 178gr. AMAX's, and it does very well. But I am considering switching to the 7mm...

Re: Savage model 12LRP caliber change question

Am I correct in thinking the 7mag and 7wsm do not have this problem with heavier bullets? Will the wsm handle the 180 bergers? I have become a big fan of bergers if you can't tell. If not I have seen 900 yard kills with the 162 amax.

Re: Savage model 12LRP caliber change question

My suggestion would be to look in the reloading section here. My research has shown that mag-length on the 180's is doable, but if I switch, I will probably run 162 AMAX's, or 175 Sierra's...

Re: Savage model 12LRP caliber change question

Gotten ahead of myself. I need to weigh buying gun, replacing barrel, and mag verses just buying new. Like the action but cost of barrel and the fact it would not be used very often may lead to just purchasing a lrh or a model 16.
