Which custom Action?

Re: Which custom Action?

Mike at BlackOps Prec. has Defiance make his actions too. I have a UGSW Infidel.

Re: Which custom Action?

I know a few fellas that have build budget minded Benchrest rifles with atlas actions and they shoot just as well as anything else. I think they are a great value. Lee

Re: Which custom Action?

I have two of the Pierce 700 clones and like them a lot. They were a good price/feature combination for me. Sure some of the other customs are nicer (I do like the integrated rail for strength), but not for twice the price IMO. I've built rifles with re-worked rem receivers and much prefer the straight Pierce pieces. The latest build was a 7WSM magazine fed rifle:

Re: Which custom Action?

I always thought the Pierce actions looked well made. I just dont see or hear much about them. Wonder why? Lee

Please back this up with some rationale. Id like to see what this opinion is based on. Have you personally seen the machining of Surgeons vs BAT vs Templar etc? Used them in the field? Compared them side by side? If so, then Im very interested in your thoughts. I have handled all these actions personally. A lot of characteristics influence quality...ie cost vs functionality vs cosmetics vs materials. The list goes on and on. There are many top notch actions available. But by far the overall nicest actions I have ever handled are coming out of Rathdrum Idaho

Re: Which custom Action?

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the ability to use AW magazines. It won't matter for some, but for me, every action I buy from now on will have to accept them.

FN SPR/Model 70

Controlled Round Feed
Mauser-style extractor
Integrated Recoil Lug
Flat Bottom
Mechanical Ejection
3-position Safety

What custom action compares? Not even AI or TRG have CRF or the extraction of a Model 70.

Agree 100%

After using AW mags with my M2008, I wouldn't even consider AICS or Alphas for a short action non-magnum cartridge.

They are well made and very good guys to work with. A fellow hide member I shoot with regularly has more then one, good actions to build on. The reason you don't see or hear much about them here is they are focused more toward the benchrest crowd where they are quite well known. I definitely recommend them for their work, honesty and very fast turn around time. My factory action rebarrel and truing amongst other things took just about 5 weeks, the full builds for two members here took about the same.

Re: Which custom Action?

Well guys bought a complete new built rifle from Adam on here built by RWS with a Defiance action and just waiting for it to get here.

Re: Which custom Action?

i wasnt crazy about the defiance action i had. This is just my personal opinion. I am a benchrest shooter so my expectations are a bit different than some. Lee

Re: Which custom Action?

it is real hard to get any better than a defiance (for a 700 style action), they are ultra smooth, the bolts are timed perfectly and are one piece. The case extraction starts as soon as you move the bolt and the overall build quality is pretty amazing.

+10 Short Action Customs Alpha 11, one of the best,
if not The best, for the money, call Mark he's GTG

Re: Which custom Action?

Check out the Bighorn actions. I have a Big Horn short action and it is a work of art. Very smooth, great fit and finish, very accurate on my 7mm RSAUM.

Re: Which custom Action?

I have built on a good many different custom receivers and I have never measured or messed with one a far as truing it up because I can't imaging having to after dropping a grand or more! I can tell you this with certainty, The rifles I build on remingtons that I true up consistently shoot as well and more often than not better than the full customs. I am with 300 sniper on this one. The only thing the custom receiver really gets you is better resale and a seat at the cool kids table. If I were to buy another custom, I would go with a bat, Kelly atlas, or possibly bighorn.
