Suppressors question on threading

lost wages, nv (Vegas Baby :-)
I'm doing a bolt action build, only it's a 7mm-08
cause I like the caliber (and I already have two
savage 99's in that caliber :)

so I asked earlier if I could use a 30 cal
suppressor with a 7mm .. most said yes, so
what thread should I use ... maybe a direct
or maybe a flash hider system ???

Thoughts and suggestions ????

I am willing to bet that almost any 30 cal suppressor you get will be compatible with 5/8-24 threads. There are a few that use other thread patters, so you might want to choose a can before you have the gun threaded. </div></div>

thanks I couldn't find anything with the search but I'm still new here (for now) I'll check it out ..

Re: question on threading

It depends somewhat on the OD of the barrel. I have a 700 with a standard hunting barrel and I am going to have to do a 9/16 thread. There is not enough barrel there to do a 5/8-24

Now if you have a heavy barrel of what some call a medium heavy, that will allow you plenty of extra so that you can get to the 5/8-24

Search on this site sucks. Use the custom Google search, it works very well:

Re: question on threading

On bolt guns I personally prefer the 5/8x24 direct connect. You can always run a flash suppressor as your thread protector. Earlier someone was mentioning that you need enough shoulder to lock up on & is spot on. A solution is a thread adapter - haven't tried one yet but I did see some online. The thought process I use here is that I will keep the can probably forever due to the tax stamp, but it seems like once I get all the bugs worked out of a rifle, I end up selling to chase the next dream. I have had to re-thread a can twice, and the process was not fun at all.

Re: question on threading

It is possible to make thread adapters for the suppressor so the largest thread you're likely to use is the one. My Desert Tactical uses a 3/4-24 thread and I like using the largest thread possible so my suppressors are built that way. The further away from the bore you get with the threads the less likely you are to have any distortion in the bore. On the other hand some rifles don't have enough meat to do a thread that big so you have an insert to screw into the can that goes from 3/4 to 5/8 and if you need even smaller you go to 9/16. If you want to pop it on your .223 you go to 1/2-28. Use the largest thread you can and you get more options, at least on the can.

Agreed. This link is much more useful!!

For now the standard remington 7mm-08 varmint

Later I'll look into re-barreling to something more
Custom.

Re: question on threading

Remington factory varmint contour has adequate material for a 5/8x24 thread. To double check, measure the muzzle end with a caliper, it should be .83" This same barrel comes threaded from the factory on the Remington 700 SPS AAC, Remington 5R and even the GAP Gladius. This thread pattern will accommodate any suppressor or brake you want to go with.

9/16 leaves you either using a suppressor that has the 9/16 threads or an adapter to mate to the 5/8 suppressor threads. Both not the best options. The adapter will need to be long as the threads are too close to overlap in the adapter.

If you thread the barrel 1/2x28 tpi, and use an adapter to mate to a 5/8 suppressor, the adapter does not need to be longer as the threads can overlap for the adapter.

1/2x28 is plenty good on a thin barrel if you use a .600" length. Just do not mess up and try a 5.56 suppressor on it.

picked it up today, looks to be 13/16"
so I assume I'll have plenty of meat to thread :)

so 5/8x24 it is ..

thanks all
