Going to get a 223 bolt gun but most of the varmit barrels are 26 in. I want it shorter. How short is to short and what do I loose if I cut it. It wont be shorter than 20 in

Thanks

Re: Barrel length

+1 on the above comment. You'll lose velocity (how much exactly depends on a number of factors) which in turn may have an impact on your max effective range with your rifle (again...depending on a number of other factors in addition to bbl length). Just make sure that you match your particular barrel's rate or twist with the proper bullet weight and velocity to achieve the job you want/need to get done.

Re: Barrel length

18-22 inch is a pretty good compromise for balance and handling, go closer to 18 if you want to put a break or suppressor on and longer if left as is.

Re: Barrel length

I have a Remington model 700 with a 20" barrel and it will ring metal all day at 600 yds.

If you notice it has a AR15 muzzle break. That is because I have put a suppessor on it down the line, and the one I plan on getting attaches to that break.

Nice rig that might be the way I go.

Re: Barrel length

On an AR I love 18" 223 barrels, I think thats the perfect length on an AR. On a bolt, I don't think it really matters. Anything from 16-24" would work with the 223, just choose a length you are comfortable with (I would presume you would feel most comfortable with a 20" barrel), and don't look back.

Re: Barrel length

Here is my 16.25" for reference, has been out to 1000yds. Shot to 500-600 on the regular.

Re: Barrel length

Feel free to buy it if you want, it's for sale.

Personally, after firing a few different length .223 bolt actions I wasn't seeing too much for going longer than what about 16". I built it for a walking lighter weight walking around rifle and it fit the bill perfectly. I have taken it out to 1000yds a few times, it's mostly shot out to 500-600yds though and does a damn good job.
