First off I want to say hello, I'm a new member on the forum with a passion for guns/shooting.

I'm looking at buying a remington 700P in .308. This will be my first bolt action rifle. I'm mainly using this for range shooting and long distance (when I'm capable of going somewhere that has the long distance I'm looking at hitting). I'm kind of on a budget and dont want to spend too much. I have seen the 700P's going for 899 plus shipping and ffl fees on broker. Is that price about right for a new one?

For glass I'm thinking about going with the Weaver 4-20x50 30mm FFP. This will be my first scoped gun and I'm still learning/researching a lot of info on here as well as other sites. Its a lot to take in for my first bolt/scoped gun.

Any recommendations or suggestions?

FWIW I'm a lefty and will be shooting this Left Handed! I was going to get a left handed model but I noticed the P doesnt come in left handed or its really hard to find and what I'm doing with it I should have no problems shooting a right hander left handed!

Re: New Bolt action rifle, looking at the 700P in .308

If you buy from buds, the shipping is free.
http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/produ...ce+308WIN+26+HB

There is a fee to use credit though, so it may be a wash.
The weaver 4-20 is a very nice scope, but has limited adjustment and I believe it is only available in mil/moa.

The 3-15x mil/mil version would be a better all around choice for most uses.

A good choice on the rifle, it comes with a much better trigger than the x mark pro.

Re: New Bolt action rifle, looking at the 700P in .308

I am in the same boat- looking for Remington action in 308 but want to make sure it is capable of hitting at 800 yards- and I know that not all remington barrels can accurately reach that distance- 168-175 grain federal match- want an AICS stock and NightForce scope.

Re: New Bolt action rifle, looking at the 700P in .308

R700P is a GREAT choice. I compete with a 700P in .308. My rifle is roughly 8-9 years old and shoots very well. Sub MOA. I paid $700 for it bone stock 3 years ago. The best advice I can give you is...buy once, cry once.

It is an expensive sport...if you start out with the bare minimum and least expensive gear, you will DEFINATELY want to start replacing your set-up with more advanced gear as you get better and shoot more. Plus, if you dont get into it, the quality gear always sell's when you need to get rid of it.

Personal opinion to start...buy used:

700P in .308
Vortex PST FFP
MCM, Manners, McRee stock
Harris Bipod
Seekins rings

Re: New Bolt action rifle, looking at the 700P in .308

This is my reasonably inexpensive entry comp gun.....$2,975...all bought used except the McRee.

8-9 year old 700P, 26" barrel, Seekins rings, McRee folder, HDMR G2, KMW bolt knob.

Re: New Bolt action rifle, looking at the 700P in .308

There's a Rem700 in .308 SPS AAC SD for sale on here right now...guy is only asking for $650 new in box.

700 SPS AAC SD

I think that would be a great starter rifle.

I need to find a different FFL if I'm going to use buds. My local ffl wants 100 if buying through buds but only 25 if buying through someone else. I guess he's protesting buds prices

Re: New Bolt action rifle, looking at the 700P in .308

I'm looking at the P because its better finish and better stock from the beginning. I'm not going to have the money to put a awesome stock on it right away so I'd rather have something better for now.

Also what do you guys recommend for the rings and mounting setup. 1 piece rail?

I was thinking about using the Glass on my AR15 as well, if its possible to swap out without messing things up. If not I guess it'll be on the 700 solely

I'm also thinking about going with the Jewel Trigger on the 700 any input on this trigger? BTW I'm a Leftie that will be shooting it left handed!

Re: New Bolt action rifle, looking at the 700P in .308

I'd run the stock trigger. The Jewel can be finicky in the dirt.

The limited travel of the Weaver is IMO only an issue if you plan to shoot past 1000 yds. and/or you don't plan to use a 20 MOA base.

It is available in Mil/Mil.

That said, I ended up going with the SWFA 5-20. It was more money, but I like the reticle a lot more and it has more vertical travel. The Weaver 4-20 is only available with a standard mil-dot reticle. The 3-15 Weaver has a better reticle, and more vertical travel. If 15x is all you need, it is a good deal, too.

Re: New Bolt action rifle, looking at the 700P in .308

I seen an LTR for sale somewheres online it was 223 though for a lefty I think the 308 was out of stock. Im right handed but left eye dom. I think its actually easier to shoot a right handed gun left handed you dont have to take your hand off the grip rack the bolt with your right. although it would be nice to be able to do it the other way.

Im also looking at the P models such as your self, check out http://scoutsupplycompany.com/rifle-packages/

he was offering an accurized 700p trued action etc for an awesome price its not listed atm for some reason most likely he doesnt have 1 in stock. Ive been pming back and fourth asking about addons, think it was like 1100 for a P model barrel cut to w/e legnth threaded capped trued up ( - threads, but does it for free when you get a new barrel, assume you have to pay the machinging for the actual barrel though ). Thought it was a great bang for buck.

I just seen a Weaver scope for sale mil/mil ffp in a midway ad in my email for lke 750ish bucks looked pretty decent lemme find it.

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/[email protected]&cm_mmca2=CustNum=102783843

must be the one talked about above, onsale for $717

I got a NF for my M14 was gonna swap it over to a bolt when I got one, but I love the way it looks on there, was looking at PSTs as well, this has sparked my interest some especiall if I get a 18-20 shorty.

Hope it helps

Re: New Bolt action rifle, looking at the 700P in .308

I was looking at the 4-16 you listed but figured for the little money difference the 4-20 or something like the vortex viper pst 6.5-24x50 would be better. The weaver 4-20 does not come illuminated and its mil/Moa the 4-16 comes illuminated and mil/mil. I'm new to all of this but want the best bang for my buck.

I won't be messing with the trigger right away something down the road. I've heard good things about the jewels is only reason i put that.

Re: New Bolt action rifle, looking at the 700P in .308

Ok I just went to my LGS and he said he ordered a 700P in and he then showed me a 700 5R. Now he's got me kinda interested in the 5R. Whats the benefits for my situation on going with a 5R. I like the look if a all black gun but I could always coat the stainless barrel/action. I'm not a huge fan of the green stock on the 5R but wouldn't be a deal breaker either. Just not sure if its worth going to the 5R

Re: New Bolt action rifle, looking at the 700P in .308

The 5R is a fine rifle and most are tack drivers out of the box.

My 5R barrel cleans easier and coppers far less than my SPS barrel. (coppering is damn near non-existant in my 5r).

The stainless steel action and barrel SEEM to be of higher quality.

I had my 5R action trued, the smith noted that from the factory, it was much truer than the blue steel actions.

The 700P comes with a far better trigger (40X vs X mark Pro).

When I bought the 5R, the 700P was being offered with the x mark as well (or so I believe), since they have gone back to the 40X, I consider that a huge selling point.

Re: New Bolt action rifle, looking at the 700P in .308

Consider FN Herstal and the new Model 70 Winchesters too.
The FN TSR XP I have shoots really well. Every bit as good as the
Savage FCP SR I had. Consider Savage as well. Just my 2cents

Re: New Bolt action rifle, looking at the 700P in .308

As for your concern on a lefty shooting a right handed bolt action, I have done it for years and rather like it. Now it would be odd to shoot a left hande rifle. I like when shooting single shots being able too clearly see the chamber and ease of dropping the cartridge in.

^^^This is a good deal.

The 5R is good too, like you I couldn't stand the stock or stainless finish so I upgraded it
</div></div>
Nice rifle you got your wife. I'm jealous. That looks sweet. I like the tan stock too you did in duracoat. I'm still on the fence if I need a 5R or just get the 700P for what I'm using it for. But always have a habbit of buying more/better then I need. Plus resale. hoping the better rifle will be more in the end. If I ever sell this thing

+1. lots of great builds with these AAC-SDs. i hit out to 600 all the time and I'm sure i could hit further if i had the chance

Re: New Bolt action rifle, looking at the 700P in .308

So anyone else on there opinions on the 700p or the 700 5R. I went to the lgs today he got in the 700P and I compared them both. I will def want to coat the SS barrel on the 5r but I like the look of the jeweled bolt for some reason so it would prolly stay just with a bolt knob upgrade. The 5r had a chip in the stock so he said he could order me one have it in 2 days. I'm still on the fence on which one to get.

In the future I plan on a chassis and truing the action/barrel, bolt knob, threaded and capped, hopefully a suppressor in the future. Just can't hit the nail on the head. The pricing he's giving me is $150 diff between both models. Which isn't terribly bad compared to sticker differences.

Another vote for Scout Supply Co. I went with the Stage II SPS Tactical package. Give Russell a call, he is a great guy to do business with.

Re: New Bolt action rifle, looking at the 700P in .308

Well I ended up going with the 700 5R in .308 He said it should be in either tomorrow or Monday at the latest.

Next is find the exact glass, and mounts I want, save money for trigger, bipod, bolt knob, and coating the stainless with something along the lines of cerakote. Later on possibly truing, and some other gunsmith work. possibly a chassis if I end up liking this enough to go crazy on.
