Spent a little time in the woods this evening with my son. We set out to hunt whitetails, but after about 20 mins in the ground blind, WWIII started on the rifle range and the trap fields a few hundred yards from us (we hunt on the same property as our shooting club). A little frustrated, I said "what the heck" and hung the Foxpro in a small oak tree about 50 yards from the blind. About 5 minutes into "young whitetail distress," this pretty little female showed up in the treeline to my left about 150 yards out. She just sat there checking things out. My son got the rifle settled in the right direction and the rest was history. He was extremely excited and told me that this was 100 times better than deer hunting. Awesome time spent with my boy! (Sorry for the crappy pic).

Nice! I've envied your rifle season in SC for years. What are the specs on the rifle and can?

Re: My Son Got His First Coyote This Evening

Thanks wfj22. Rifle is a Jon Beanland built .223 Rem. Surgeon RSR action, McMillan A1-3 Edge, Brux 7.7 twist fluted 18.5 inch barrel, Surgeon bottom metal and a Shilen trigger all coated in Coyote CeraKote. Surgeon aluminum base, Seekins rings and a FFP 4-16 Viper PST. Suppressor is a TBAC 30P1 on an adapter as my AAC Ranger II is on my actual coyote rig lightweight AR.

ya...deer hunting is alot less exciting unless you hunt on property with tons and tons of deer. There is a great deal more downtime.

Re: My Son Got His First Coyote This Evening

Oh no!!! You did it now!!! Congratulate him on the yote and welcome him to his new addiction. I love to hunt big game but with only being allowed one here and that's only if you get a tag predator hunting is a lot more fun.

Re: My Son Got His First Coyote This Evening

Thanks folks. He's an outstanding young man and he has most definitely found a new obsession. We're gonna try 'em again next week on another property I have access to. Whitetails? We don't need no stinking whitetails! Predators hunting predators. What could be better than that?

Nice job. Keep in mind that if a coyote will come into a call with all that shooting then the deer don't really mind that much either. They should be used to activity and shooting periodically on a rifle range.

Yep. We have taken deer from that same stand with folks shooting on the range. Truth be told, I was just looking for an excuse to call some 'yotes! I swear I'd rather hunt those doggies than I would deer. Only probelm is they don't eat near as well.

Great time with son, and a great thing for the continuity of the 2nd amendment and tradition of the shooting sports/hunting.

Congrats, best time hunting is with the kids. I agree with him. I've said for years predator hunting is where its at season is longer n tags cheaper.

Taking the coyote definitely helps the deer population.
A recent study in TN determined that coyotes kill 70% of newborn fawns.
