AR15 upper suggestions

I'm considering an upper build for my AR15 to designate as a medium/long range setup.

I'm not new to building AR rifles, but I haven't been very much concerned about accurizing the setup for longer range use.

Any suggestions and/or opinions on some of the best components to use for this rifle on a lower budget would be awesome.

I'll be using this rifle for mostly range use out to 500 or so yards for the time being. I might eventually turn it into my 3 gun rifle, but for now it will be designated for longer range only.

I've also considered taking some steps to improve one of my existing uppers. The one in particular is a DTI upper receiver with yhm diamond free float rail system and a 16 inch 1 in 9" DTI non chrome lined HBAR and YHM phanton flash hider. Its a mid length gas system and rail. All bolt components are also DTI.

Thanks in advance for your input and knowledge!!

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

Hard to get a great set up on a low budget. Check out JP Rifles at http://www.jprifles.com/

I tend to view their rifles as the Ferrari of the AR world.

Depending on distance you are looking to get to a Swarovski Z6i is a great glass, though not on the lower end of the budget.

I am running a JP Rifle PSC-11 with an 18" barrel with the Swarovski Z6i 1-6x24 and am very happy with that set up.

Hope this helps

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

Take a look at BCM MK 12 uppers. Should be something from them that will meet your needs.

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

What kind of accuracy do you guys expect from the ar rifles you've mentioned? and at what range?

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

If you decide to build, White Oak barrels are very accurate and surprisingly affordable. 18" rifle gas might be a good fit for lr or 3gun.

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

I've been researching the same topic recently - range toy for intermediate ranges.

White Oak Armament will build a complete upper with varmint contour barrel (16/18/20") for $595; for an additional $30 they'll build with their 18" SPR barrel in your choice of mid or rifle-length gas system. I was quoted 8-12 weeks for a complete upper, or 6-8 weeks for just a barrel if you wanted to build your own.

Alternately, the Rock River Arms Predator Pursuit has a reputation for very good accuracy as well.

Another option for a "budget precision AR" is building using the DPMS Mark 12 barrel...$180 from Midway (less if you use a discount code) and it seems a lot of folks on the interwebs have been very surprised with its accuracy.

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

JP Rifles have a variety of barrels available, and from what I hear, very accurate. They can also build you the upper.

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

upper receiver with M4 ramps, a 18 spr barrel from white oak armament a forearm to you liking, JP adjustable gas-block and the corresponding tube. their you go.

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

I'm definitely seeing good things about White Oak. They are at a great price point as well.

Do you find that an adjustable gas block is normally necessary?

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

Depends on the barrel maker ...with white oak, probably don't need it, because their ports are good. Adjustable can help if running a suppressor.

Look into Syrac if your interested in adjustable, very good adjustable design.

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

I've been running a WOA 18" SPR barrel on my home built upper along with a JP rifle length float tube and PRI Front gas block/sight for awhile and it will put five rounds into a dime at 100

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

Take a look at BCM. Their gear is top notch.

Also, go check out Palmetto State Armory barrels....they are made by FNH. Very nice barrels.

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

I haven't put it together yet, but I went with a VLTOR upper. They seem to be highly thought of...

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

The JP adjustable gas block lets you dial down the felt impulse by turning the gas down to the point where you only are redirecing enough to cycle the weapon. Usually come back 1/4 to 1/2 turn to account for different rounds and the gun getting dirty. This comes into play for quicker follow on shots as it will significantly reduce what you feel as recoil (and therefore how much the sights are moving around) when used in conjunction with a good muzzle break.

The op rod design such as the POF will hit harder recoil wise and there's not much you can do about it. They are great guns and run very clean, but you are getting the full force of that op rod slamming the bolt back.

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

IF you build, be sure to opt for a clamp on gas block as opposed to the style that secures to the barrel from the bottom.

Also a monolithic MEGA upper would be my recommendation, if you can find em.

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

I just recently finished a build for a friend using an Adams arms piston upper. I did find the recoil to be considerably sharper.

Re: AR15 upper suggestions

If you want to build the upper, I'd look into White Oak for the barrel. If you want to buy it put together, my personal opinion is that you wont find a better upper than a SS Noveske.

With accuracy being listed in your requirements, I hope you've got a great trigger in that lower you're using. Without it, you're going to have a hard time at 500 yrds regardless of the upper.

Just last week I received this exact 18" SPR barreled upper (rifle gas) from WOA. Excellent fit and finish. Even got a free T-shirt in the box. They quoted 12+ weeks delivery BUT I had it in less than six weeks. I had planned on around Christmas time and got it before Halloween. I've only shot it twice, 50 rds to break in and then a hundred rounds of USGI MK262 for initial accuracy testing. It's a sweet shooter, approx .75 to 1 MOA so far with that load.

I'm happy with their customer service and the quality of the upper. Especially for the money spent, I'm stupid happy. Would buy from them again in a heart-beat.

When you want to tune ur gas system in to the load your useing, yes. If u just want it to work, no. Lot of people live by them like myself, but most are reloaders like myself
