Public land (local state park), after 3 days of hunting this area and seeing all kinds of signs but nothing til after I couldn't see the pins anymore this girl walked out about 45* downwind, 25yd from my climber.

She folded immediately, I was shaking from the rush afterwards, it was not the shortest distance kill that I've had but it brought back 110% of the exhiliration I got on my first deer.

Ruined the broadhead though, it seperated C4/5 and she dropped in her tracks. Second easiest recovery I've ever had.

Shot with a c.1996 Mathews SoloCam QD-32 that I have been borrowing from a buddy. Graphic pics down below.

On the hoof 112#, which is around average size for the does in this area.

Re: First score with a bow!

Nice shot!! Nothing like the business end of a meat missile coming in contact with the "off switch". I love that shit! Reminds me of my backstraps hittin the ground late last winter.

Re: First score with a bow!

Thanks guys!

Certainly no meat ruined here, that's a nice buck Whoshotya.

We just finished up the backstraps from last year's freezer stuffer tonight. About 10 minutes later the processor called to say "It's done, come pick it up by the end of the week"

Certainly not as nice as I had hoped for... But it was a quality late season Urban deer kill. Car horns were honkin minutes before he hit the the dirt. I figured what the hell...better in my freezer than in someones windsheild.

Re: First score with a bow!

That's where I got this one, state park but within sight of where I parked my car practically on top of the hiking trail...

I have 4 doe tags (now 3) for this WMU, the deer are all over the place but they're not totally stupid. About 15mins before this one bit it a pair of hikers noisily tromped up the trail about 100yd from me yacking away.

I figured "well, maybe just sit til it's closing but your chances are shot to shit now"

Re: First score with a bow!

Why the neck shots? I've done it, mbut find it much less forgiving than going for the boiler room.

Re: First score with a bow!

Thanks guys!

It was rapidly approaching "too dark", which incidentally was right at closing time legally with the mild overcast we had that night. I could just BARELY sight through the peep properly and ID the pin.

She was half in the bushes and I didn't want to risk a deflection through heavy vines taking a torso shot, I hoped for the best and it paid this time.

Ideally, I would not have attempted a neck shot if a clean torso shot was available but you take what you can get sometimes.

Re: First score with a bow!

Congrats on the deer bohem. I guess it's a good thing you have 3 more tags with the size of that freezer in the pic.

Re: First score with a bow!

Are you guys not getting complete pass through with your arrows?
I've never seen one just stick that shallow in a neck.
I hit a doe Sun night at 23yds, double lung, zipped right through with NAP Spitfire.

most neck shots are not on purpose

The broadhead hit C4/5 and was wedged solidly between them and it severed the spinal column

Yeah, most are not, especially with archery hunting. This was the shot given to me, nothing more nothing less.

Exactly. Most always an alert deer will never be in the same spot or position as when you dropped the string. You'd be suprised how much they will move throughout the arrows TOF.

Im calling bullshit. It was dark, your first archery deer, and you just plain missed but got lucky with a miss that hit the neck and still got you a kill.

Re: First score with a bow!

I approve of none of this story, but congrats on the archery deer nonetheless

Guess who just signed himself off the "here's some steaks" list?

What's the issue(s) with the way I got the deer? I'm genuinely curious, if you would prefer to PM me that is fine too.

Re: First score with a bow!

who gives a shit what anyone else thinks or approves? i dont remember seeing you ask for permission, approval or praise.

some tasty groceries are laying on the ground. don't much matter how or where the shot hit and all that non-sense.

brown down dude..

good work.

Re: First score with a bow!

Thanks KE, I really don't see anything wrong, I'm curious as to what could be an issue...

Nothing illegal about it, properly tagged and the doe is in an area where the state issues 110,000 antlerless tags (about 40% of the total state allocation) because the population is so out of control.

Certainly not losing sleep over it... in fact, I'm going to be BBG'ing the ribs tonight for dinner

What do I have issues with ....
All of these things above.

You don't have to answer to me or anybody else so don't worry none about what I say. It is just that I have likely been archery hunting longer than you have been alive based on your picture. I have a different viewpoint on the sport is all. The end does not always justify the mean.

You took a shot you should not have taken, in conditions you probably shouldn't have been shooting in, and got super lucky you recovered that deer. Archery hunting requires plenty of patience. You showed none. The fact you also don't see anything questionable in what you did, concerns me too. I suspect you will evolve as a bow hunter, and soon learn what some are talking about....To be frank.

That is just my opinion, since you asked bohem. Otherwise I'd have kept my trap shut.. Take it however you want. Congrats on your first bow kill though. Quite the feeling I know. Good luck in filling your other tags!!

What he said.

Low percentage shot. Had it gone the other way, and you wounded that doe and not recovered it, would you have still posted this story? Im guessing not likely.

Bad hits happen no matter how hard we try, deer will be lost no matter how hard we try, no sense flirting with disaster on purpose.

Re: First score with a bow!

bow hunting a very challenging sport. The improvements in the equipment over the years has helped out. I used to bow hunt alot but don't do it anymore. It's usually too hot and too many bugs for my taste.

That's definitely true, as I see a lot of bowsights now that are significantly brighter (and still not powered illumination) than what I have.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I do hear what you're saying. Luck and positive ID are not the same, this had a mix of both, in retrospect not the best idea in this case.

Re: First score with a bow!

Don't get me wrong about what I have said. I was a first time bowhunter myself a few decades back. I understand all that goes into this choice, and while I don't approve of it at this time, if you were my buddy here I would surely give you a bit of grief about it later, but I would also high five you and go out and help you drag the deer out of the woods and dress it and process the meat and even make you some jerky out of it.
