PWS MK114

Re: PWS MK114

I've discovered two major problems with PWS rifles. First, once you have one, you'll want another. Second, your other ARs will start to feel ignored.

Re: PWS MK114

This is a great thread. I actually found it AFTER buying an MK110, but have read the entire thing. I still have about a month to go until I receive my stamp, so this is good therapy to help with the wait!

I have a question that I hope you can answer.

I see the QD sling attachment points on the buffer tube and at the back of the rails. I don’t see anything forward, though.

Rather than add an adapter, does it look like it’s possible to drill out a portion of the rail and put in a QD attachment base? Is there enough clearance between the back of the rail and the barrel? Something like this: http://www.impactweaponscomponents.com/product/qd-micro-mount/ or something similar?

I don’t like unnecessary contraptions on my rifle and if an attachment point can be embedded into the rail rather than using a mount it would be just one less thing to worry about…

Thanks for the great information DMack!

Re: PWS MK114

Got the MK114 7.62x39 upper a few weeks ago. I finally had time to sit down and sight it in. I bought 5 ASC magazines and haven't experienced any problems with them in the first 500 rounds. After break in, I put a slide fire on and have been working on short controlled bursts.
Next is a MK109 in 300, I'm addicted!

Re: PWS MK114

Just received my much anticipated MK114 today. Added a geissele sd-c trigger. Haven't shot it yet, but am oh so looking forward to it! Also looking to purchase a Eotech or SWFA 1x4.

Re: PWS MK114

Ranger... Go with the variable... You will find that the MK114 is a fantastic "do everything well" rifle.

Re: PWS MK114

Ordered the MK114 on Friday with Geissele SSA trigger. Hopefully get to shoot it next weekend.

Re: PWS MK114

DMack, thanks for all the great information you have posted on this site reviewing optics, the gun, and everything else related
smile.gif
From your information and other great information from others I ended up with a MK114 last week and I've shot about a hundred rounds in it and thoroughly enjoyed it. This is my first AR and I've had a ton of fun taking it apart and understanding how it works.

I am now looking into getting optics and upgrading the trigger. I'm not a big fan of the stock trigger and I had my mind set on the SSA-E trigger but on your recent Facebook post, you seem to have switched over to the CMC tactical triggers. Also to the flat style trigger instead of the standard curve. I haven't had a chance or know anyone with a flat trigger so I was wondering your opinion on the CMC tac trigger vs the Geissele SSA-E or SD-E. You mentioned some possible reliability issue after your thousands of rounds, but in terms of trigger pull and smoothness are they very similar?

Lastly in terms of optics, have you had a chance to play with any Leupold optics? I have a friend who works there so he's been asking me to buy through him and with their discount it's very comparable to other models. I was looking at the Leupold VX-6 Multi-gun (1-6x SFP illuminated SPR reticle).

Oh and about mounting. You mentioned about pay once, cry once, enjoy forever. I don't think I have any practical application for a QD mount, is there a solid non QD mount you would recommend that isn't a budget buster? I also was planning on just getting the Leupold Mark 2 IMS.

Thanks again for all the help you have put into this!

Re: PWS MK114

Well, my MK114 arrived yesterday and will have to wait a week before I can go shoot it but I have a few questions for anyone who can answer.

1. I ordered it from a out of state dealer and asked for the FSC556, but it showed up with the SM556. Anyone have any experience with both comps that can give me an educated opinion on whether there is much of a difference in their performance? What I have read is the FSC is slightly better than the SM in muzzle climb and recoil because of the extra baffle. I wanted the FSC based on that but is the difference worth the trouble of sending the rifle back?

2. I had them drop the Geissele SSA trigger in it. I was surprised that I can't put the gun on SAFE unless the hammer is cocked. The FIRE/SAFETY switch won't rotate otherwise. Is this normal or was the trigger possibly installed wrong? I haven't owned an AR, but this is the first time I have seen a safety switch not rotate under any condition.

3. Mixed reviews out there on the use of a boresnake in rifles. Anyone had any problems with them in a PWS rifle?

Appreciate the feedback.

Re: PWS MK114

Ranger,

Thanks for the response to my questions. Since this is my first AR I show some of my ignorance, but I have often said "There are no stupid questions; Just stupid people with really good questions?"

Having often settled for less than the best and regretted the decision afterwards, I wanted to be confident I was getting as close to perfect with the MK114. Since I may never fire an AR with the FSC, I have to trust folks who have, for a little reassurance.

I see your point about using the SAFE on an empty rifle, but if you assume every gun is loaded and ready to fire, it would make sense that the shooter could put a gun on SAFE anytime to me. I show my inexperience with ARs.

I ordered a bore snake that should work with my Marlin 60 and the MK114. However, I read a few horror stories where bore snakes were getting stuck in the barrel. Before I take a chance with my 27 year old Marlin or my brand new MK, I wanted to see if anyone had any words of caution or confidence.

Thanks again.

Re: PWS MK114

I haven't had that issue with the normal bore snake. They have a new bore snake Viper out that I've heard a few horror stories. I've decided to stay with my normal bore snake instead of getting the Viper.

Also if you want something sturdier, you can look at the Otis cleaning kit which is rather inexpensive and you shouldn't have any issues with it.

Re: PWS MK114

So I have my new mk110. Really liking it and am going to pick up an mk114 this week. I would like to change the charging handle to the new style bcm. Any idea on how to remove the piston retaining pin? It doesn't look like a standard roll pin and a few taps with a punch didn't budge it at all. I emailed pws but haven't heard from them...

Re: PWS MK114

Finally got to take my new MK114 out and put a few rounds through it. First impressions were luke warm. I was using PCM Bronze 55grain and had a FTF with a round ending up pushed into one still in the chamber and that was in the first 10-15 rounds. I put a total of 40 rounds through it, so it could have been a fluke but disappointing after all I had read.

Another guy had a Colt 6720 and I had a chance to compare both guns. Weight and balance were indistinguishable between the two which is great. The recoil with the SM556 comp was less than his Colt. Didn't really get a chance to fire enough rounds to really compare noise and blast between the 556 and his A2, but it did seem the 556 was louder and had more concussion. My father-in-law has a Bushmaster and I will compare the two over Thanksgiving with a few more rounds.

The most surprising and disappointing was the twang in the buffer tube on the MK114. I had not read much on it and it was usually on the positive side, but it was so noticeable that I was surprised and very disappointed. Didn't really notice it on the Colt.

Anyone have any comments? Is it a problem with my buffer tube and spring?

Re: PWS MK114

I noticed the issue when I was shooting at benchrest since every shot was just very slow/precise. When shooting more rapidly I never noticed it. Anyhow I e-mailed PWS and they replied:

"Spring twang has always been something common in the AR platform. Some shooters notice it, others don't and it occurs in some weapons and not in others. I believe it is due to the spring itself more than anything in terms of harmonics and vibration.

I would suggest applying a light film of oil to the outside edges of the spring coils and see if that quiets it down some. Just a light film should help with that. Thank you very much for your business and support and we hope this helps."

Re: PWS MK114

First post here. Hurray!
I've read this forum for a while but never actually signed-up. Before I add my questions, I thought I'd say thanks to everyone for compiling all this information.

1)The prices for the MK114 rifles have been raised on the PWS site. All the MK1 series are $1800 now. The MK2 start at $2600. Have they changed something on the rifles or is this just supply and demand? Or was it always like that and I'm hallucinating?

2) There's now a MK114 and a MK114 LE model. Both the prices and descriptions are the same. Can someone please tell me what is different?

3) Just want to be 100% certain. The SM556 accepts more suppressors than the FCS556, right? Will anything beside Knights QDSS-NT4 suppressor or Gemtech HALO work?

Thanks again everyone.

Re: PWS MK114

Ive really be impressed with the accuracy of some of the piston rifles out. LWRC is nice, but real out of the box accuracy has stunned me in my POF 14.5 p415

Re: PWS MK114

Does anyone know of a store/dealer that has either the mk116 or mk114 rifle or upper receiver in 5.56. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: PWS MK114

May not be much help right now, but PWS posts where they are shipping rifles to on their Facebook page. I haven't seen a post in a few days though.

I have been looking there daily

Re: PWS MK114

Great thread, thanks to everyone who has contributed to this. Based on everyone's rave reviews, I am planning on taking the MK114 plunge as soon as I can find one!

Re: PWS MK114

Anyone had any time behind the new MK 114 upper yet? I watched DMack's video from Shot Show and they look pretty sweet! I heard they're already shipping them as of December on another thread here. I've got an older model in 7.62x39 that's awesome but I'd love to have a 5.56 with the floated barrel and adjustable gas block.

Re: PWS MK114

Wow, this thread has been an awesome treasure trove of good information and advice. I was planning on buying a piston AR and was originally leaning towards the Sig 516, but after reading this thread, I think a PWS Mk114 is in my future. Now if I can only find one somewhere...

I was planning on getting the SSA trigger and topping it with either the Leupold Mk6 1-6 or the USO SR8 1-8. Anyone running this glass who can comment? For the trigger, is SSA still the recommendation or is the current suggestion a CMC tactical?

Thanks again for all the assistance!

ALLCON:

I have not frequented the Hide in a while, been VERY busy at work, and devoting most of my time to my facebook page (Ranger Proof). In regards to the question about the trigger... the SSA is amazing, I still have a few of them. However, I have been beating the living snot out of the CMC tactical flat bow triggers that I have, and must say, they have really edged out the SSA for me. I just "flat" like them!

Either way you go... GA or CMC, they are both amazing triggers, and both companies are awesome to deal with.

PWS is still churning out some solid rifles, but I have not gotten my hands on the newer "MOD1" stuff, outside of SHOT. I've been so involved with the LVOA project with War Sport, that my PWS rifles have been collecting dust.

My MK114 still gets ran in classes, and still continues to shot accurately. Once it starts degrading, I will send it back to PWS for a tweak.

Thanks for keeping these threads alive, and THANK YOU TO LOWLIGHT... and the other mods, for allowing the bandwidth that these threads have produced. I'm grateful for the opportunity to write on this great forum.

DMack out.

I ran my Mk114 in a rifle class for my dept. Ran solid, everyone loved it. They also liked the fact that it balanced better and was lighter overall.

I'm no DMack with those cool pictures, but here is mine... It has the CMC trigger on it as well...

Good news is that we will be getting M16s from the gov, so There is a very good chance I'll be getting a diablo or a mk110 upper for it.

full auto Mk107 or Mk110? YES PLEASE

I have a problem with my PWS MK114 and pretty disappointed by it. After cleaning it a little over a month ago, I noticed where the muzzle device is pinned to the barrel there was rust forming around the weld. I cleaned it with Hoppes and oiled it down real well but could not remove the discoloration at the pin. Considering I have owned it for less than 8 months, put fewer than 400 rounds through it and live it a very dry climate, I never expected to see rust on the barrel. It clearly is a manufacturing problem since it is right at the pin and no where else on the gun and I keep it cleaned and oiled. I emailed PWS a couple of times about 3-4 weeks ago to see if they had any recommendations or if it was covered under warranty, but even more disappointing was I never got a response to either email.

First of all anyone got any suggestions?

First of all anyone got any suggestions?

When they weld the pin there will be discoloration at the pin from the heat generated of the welding process. The welding process will also damage the Parkerizing finish around the area making it more susceptible to rusting, a quick rub with some 000 steel wool and cold blue will make it look like normal.

Stock and Trigger w/ mk116?

Hey all,

I'm new to the forum. Thanks in advance for your insight. I just acquired a Mk116 upper assembly and have assembled my spikes lower aside from the trigger guard (waiting for enhanced mag-pul for glove room) and the actual trigger assembly. Now I know there are opinions on this out there, I have read them. I wanted a more specific answer pertaining to my situation. Application is SHTF, potentially private sector work, plinking, and general doting over.

Two questions:

1. What stock I should use with this system? I like the durability and quality construction of the UBR, but it seems like with the PWS there are some buffer tube compatibility issues? Price is not so much of an issue. I want to build it right. I am looking for good balance, insane durability, and comfort while shooting. I am weight conscious but can probably handle the slight increase in weight from a UBR as I am 6'2'' 185 and fit.

2. Trigger selection. My lower parts kit was trigger-less intentionally. In hindsight I wish I had a crap trigger to slap in there and play with. That ship has sailed, and I'm thinking why don't I do this right from the get-go? I'm new to long guns and have really only played with some bolt action 308's and 223's. Both of which I think were set up with a 1 stage. My needs here are 1. Reliability & Durability 2. Feel/Performance (I'd like to be able to grow into the trigger but I understand as a more novice shooter it will out perform me initially). Should I stick with 1 stage over 2 stage? What specific models/manufacturers would you recommend. Please site your reasoning.

Thanks again everyone!

Dmack have you had any trigger time with the mod 1 Mk1 series guns? How does it compare? Ps, I love this thread. Amazing write up

Apologies in advance for a bit of thread necromancy and incomplete reading. :)

I noticed in early parts of the thread that the lack of free-floating on the PWS rail system was called out as a potential issue for long range with a bipod. I know that current versions of the PWS Mk1 are spec'ed as having a free-floating handguard now, so I was curious if that was accurate as I'm preparing to make bids on a Mk118 listed on GunBroker.

Thx!

M

Disregard - I found on DMack's site that the newer revisions do, in fact, have a free-floating handguard. Now the long wait for my new Mk118 to arrive!

Thanks for this great thread.

I have one question: I've read about amazing accuracy, but has anyone done any measuring of groups to see what this rifle consistently shoots? I saw another review that said it shot ".5 MOA groups with boring regularity."

Can anyone contribute to this?

Thanks,

Wade
