Removing Rust from Bore

I know, I'm an idiot...

Apparently, I neglected to clean my stainless Tikka .308 last deer season (had some health issues that derailed my usual gun cleaning regimen) so now I have rust inside the barrel. Hopefully, I have not completely goobered up this rifle.

I have used my usual Wipe Out foaming bore cleaner several times and although the bore "looks" clean, I'm still getting rust on the cleaning patches.

What is the best method or product to use to remove rust inside the barrel?

Thanks!

Re: Removing Rust from Bore

If you've already cleaned it up, just shoot it.

It'll be alright.

Re: Removing Rust from Bore

Posphoric based acid rust remover. You can get at the auto part store. Apply and then clean barrel as usual with steel cleaning brush and patches. The phosphoric acid will turn the rust black. Repeat until gone. May take several cleaning. I'm sure most of the rust removal products for firearms contain phosphoric acid.

Also, the bore cleaner you are using may be oxidization the surface and the brown stuff isn't rust at all. It's your barrel on the patches.

Like the man said, take it and shoot it.

This will remove the rust. Not going to be good for the barrel at all, but it will remove the rust.

Careful with the phosphoric acid getting on any parkerized finishes. Takes it right off. Don't ask me how I know.

Eezox rust remover is the best to take any rust off a gun. I had some mild rust on the exterior of my rifles a few weeks ago and this wiped it off fast and easy. Here is a review of some major brands in rust prevention:

Maybe not the best method, but I've used kroil on patches. Run a few wet patches through every day for about a week, then clean it out and shoot it.

Good luck.

Good article. (1) I wish they would have added WD40 to the list and (2) The author could have skipped all those tests just by putting them in the dishwasher with dishwasher detergent. That would be the ultimate test. Here is some cheap damascus straight out of the dishwasher.
