Rifle Scopes I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

Ok,

I have a hard time buying scopes in which the whole ocular assembly rotates to adjust the power.

For field conditions to keep things going you almost have to run a butler creek type lens cover. But every time you change the power the stupid cap interferes with things. It gets bound up on the bolt side, bolt handle or ends up facing down.

Scopes that have a power adjust ring seem to be dialed into this.

Am I the only one like this?

I have been contemplating a Night Force but this whole problem is kind of a turn off. I know it’s a small thing but it really isn’t in the field.

Anybody have a better solution

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

I have butler creeks on all my NF's. There is a sweet spot to where I can cycle my bolt and not get in the way on any power setting. Thats with surgeon KMW knobs and the lowest rings to on myx56mm. They will work, just find the sweet spot. Good luck

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

I just use a scope coat for mine.

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

The bikini that comes with the Nightforce, tied to the scope with paracord so you don't lose it.

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

I have to say after using the Bikini covers for so long I no longer like to use butler creek caps. BC caps block my view of the elevation turret and are a distracion ( especially when shooting with both eyes open). BC caps aso tend to get broken, I have yet to break a set of NF bikini covers.

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

You can get the new thread in Tenebraex tactical ARD with Tough objective flip up cover for the front. The ocular setup does have its issues with rotating but like others said you just have to find that sweet spot.
I personally hate Butler Creeks, they just plain suck. They are finicky about opening, they let dirt and moisture in, and break very easily. I have since stopped using them on all my optics and just used the bikini types, I have actually purchased the Butler creek bikini covers for my other scopes.

You must weigh your options; durability and robustness of the nightforce, or pick something else because you like cheap flip up covers.

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

I like how the whole NXS Ocular turns.....at first I did not but the more I use it its really easy just grab the whole end and turn. I am guessing people in a really stressful situation (which I am never in for hunting purposes) that this would be easy for them too.

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

Someone needs to figure out how to make multi coated glass filters to go over the lens just like on camera lenses.

this is what i do, i don't like those butler creek covers, they break very easily. i would like to see them develop a flip cover.

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

I have a gripe with Nightforce.... offering only one option for an FFP scope that is 3-15x and costs $2300.

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

Butler creek caps dont work well for me very long. I like the bikini cover that comes with the NF.

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

I have used BC flip covers for 30 years and have never had one break, lucky I guess. That said I really like the NF bikini covers and use a para cord on them as well.

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

Bikini and para cord here. Butler creek caps suck period. Even before the were bought by some other company.I'll take any Bikini covers no one wants!

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

I've had experiences with Butler Creeks. Broke them in a matter of months just going to the range and back. The bikini covers on the NF work just fine when tied down with paracord (or in my case, boot bands).

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

As other's said, BC's suck anyway. I got to the point where I was going through a couple sets a month at $16 a set.

I prefer NF style bikini covers. I ziptie them to the tube in front of the turrets. They are just as fast to get off as flip ups and don't take much longer to get back on. I've never found myself in a hurry to get them back on anyway. They don't get in the way of view like BC flip up's either. I use NF covers for everything 50MM + and BC bikini's under 50MM but they can be a pain. I'm trying to get my hands on some Leupold cover's. They sell with with some of the 40MM scopes and are the same style as the NF's.

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

I have to agree here also, that I used to use the BC caps, but have grown to like the bikini covers much more. It may just be me, but the BC caps seem to distract or make the sight picture window smaller to me. If you look through the scope with it on, then take it off, you will probably notice quite a difference. But, that could just be me...

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

The day NF comes out with a 5-25x FFP scope for under $3k is the day I rejoice. They are great scopes but let's get some options. Same could be said for Hensoldt. Badass scope for sure, but with 2 or 3 reticle choices I am not about to drop that coin on one again.

I really like that S&B H2CMR reticle, that is why I stick with the 5-25 PMII's

+1

However i switched to Razor, its everything my NXS wanted to be.

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

couple sets a month ?? Really ?? I've had my set for a few years now... they can't be that bad... hunting, and tactical shooting...

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

The NEW butler creek flipups suck. The old ones were okay. They've changed the plastic. Now they're shit. I got sick of breaking them and handed over the cash for the Tenebraex covers (no ARD, just the covers) for my PMII's and they're awesome. Tough as hell. Need to offer them for more scopes.

I have BC flip ups on my two leupolds and USOs on my USO. I just put the rear eyepiece off to the side to block my left eye so i can shoot both eyes open, which also leaves the elevation turret visible.

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

I hate having to replace broken butler creek caps. Bikini covers are the best fix. I love my Nightforce scopes and I love having those butler creek caps in the trash.

About 8-10 years ago (I could dig through some paper files but it doesn't matter exactly when) Butler Creek, Michaels of Oregon and a couple of other shooting related companies were bought up by one entity.

For years prior to that buyout, Butler Creek had all of their production in the U.S. with the vast majority being produced by A.T.I. in Idaho. Ditto for Uncle Mikes/Michaels of Oregon.... 100% U.S. made with the vast majority produced by GrovTec close to Portland.

Within weeks of the buyout, production for both companies was moved to China. Hardly no warning was given to A.T.I. or GrovTec and that almost put both out of business. I am very happy to say that both companies put their big girl drawers on and not only kept the doors open but are doing very well now.

The product quality difference was immediate. The H.D. push button sling loops that Michaels started shipping were literally coming apart in the box during shipping.

While they look exactly the same, the Butler Creek caps are made from shit plastic and snap like potato chips. NO flex. The locking edges where the lid and ring meet will break and they won't stay snapped shut. And have you all noticed how they do not flex to meet the fit range originally specified (and used to work great). This is all due to cheap materials used in the injection mold process.

Just a little shooting industry trivia.....

Oh yeah.... Just zip tie the NF factory bikini style cover close to each end and carry on. They work very well, don't leak and rarely get accidently moved off the scope.

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

NF rotting eyepiece IS ACTUALLY AN ADVANTAGe, since you can just reach up and turn it quick while still in the scope using gross motor skills. Easier to do than finding a power ring.

I agree to a point except that the objectives lock ring came loose during a night match last summer when I went to adjust the magnification. It wasn't huge problem just something I wasn't appreciating at the time.

I much prefer the Euro style fast focus objective type located at the end of the eye piece.

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

Anyone who as ever used butler creek type lens covers for a while know that they are inferior to to bikini covers.

Might be a stupid question but what method do you use to neatly tie off the paracord, wouldnt a black zip tie be better ?

A pal of mine searched & bought a load of camera caps & took as many back until he found one that screwed into his scope, a Hawkeye brand.
Most will "almost" fit, but the threads are different or they are a fraction to small or big.

Re: I have a real gripe about some scopes......like NF

I use a zip tie on mine and the stock NF covers works awesome
