SS 10x42 HD for trainer?

Re: SS 10x42 HD for trainer?

I have a 10X as "floater' between rifles until I can get a better scope on, neer had an issue and it still works great after 6 years, I am sure it will do fine duty on any 22.

Re: SS 10x42 HD for trainer?

I use mine any where from 15 yards to 200 yards. mostly for competition shooting, and out to 500 yards for fun. If I were to hunt for game 15-75 yards i would not like the 16x if your not proficient using a scope, and comfortable with your check weld then 16x at the closer ranges takes more time to get on target. I been thinking of getting the 6x for my coyote gun...... damn it now you got me thinking again!

Re: SS 10x42 HD for trainer?

Description says the HD only focuses down to 50m. I'd be careful on that. Not sure what kind of training you want to do, but I'm also looking at the 16x model for my .22.

Re: SS 10x42 HD for trainer?

I have a 10X MIL/MIL SS on an AR15 and regularly shoot out to 700yrds with it... The glass is clear enough at 700yrs to mostly spot hits and misses. It's a great scope for the money ~$400. if I didn't already have a Vortex 6 - 20 x50 on my trainer, I'd probably put one on there without hesitation.

.......
The choice for higher magnification in my mind is about if you like to shoot groups with your .22 personally I don't like to shoot groups. Not because I can't but because the act of repetitive shooting without breaking you position doesn't really tech you much IMO. If that's your game then 10X is NOT enough. The Vortex I mentioned can be purchased for about the same investment and would be a better choice IMO.

I shoot my .22 trainer mostly in the 100-200yrd range and use it for positional training. Prone at 50yrs it'll shoot into 0.5" groups with boring regularity... but when you push it out further you learn about the wind and shooting in a wind condition... which is useful skill to pick up and train.

Super Sniper. Ya... lame name. Decent budget scope though.

Re: SS 10x42 HD for trainer?

Well, have at least a temporary solution. Putting a bushy HDR on my 243 and moving the IOR 2-12 to the 22. The IOR has been great on the 243, so it should be excellent for the shorter distances I'll be shooting the 22 at.

it depends on the size of target. There is a reason why the military has gone with lower powered optics over the years... they are engaging man sized point targets. On the m24 i only felt like the 10x was underpowered at 800+.

The marine corps did it that little extra better with going with superior glass and a 12x. However yes with a 22lr 'trainer' you are right, 10x is weak. I use a NF 3-15 and it leaves me wanting a 5-20x SS.

It is all relative. Would I ever change out the 3-10 Mk4 M3 on my MK12? hell no, its lightweight and has more than enough mag to poke dudes out to 600-800 if need be.

I would probably up it to the 12x42 SS

Re: SS 10x42 HD for trainer?

118-84, you make a good point. Comparatively, if you were to look at a scaled man-sized target at say 200 yds to practice with a 22 vs a 308 at 800 what is the comparable magnification of that scope. (my math-fu is weak on at sat night)

Re: SS 10x42 HD for trainer?

Well, if the target is scaled for such range (so that would mean 4 times smaller in every dimension for 200 vs 800), it would appear the same size regardless of scope power.

If using the same target size, you would need 4x less power in your scope to see the same. I do feel that using scaled targets is more realistic though.

So just use the same power as the longer range guns, but use scaled targets.

This is the objective for a trainer. ^^^

Re: SS 10x42 HD for trainer?

It will work for whatever you want to use it for... I have had a SS 10X on a .308 platform for about 3 years.... Its been to 1K and in and has ALWAYS held up to some abuse/use.

Re: SS 10x42 HD for trainer?

I have a SS 12x on my Savage MKII TR. It's great in between. honestly, save the dough and buy the non HD version. For the price it's some of the best glass i've looked through. At the distances I shoot with my 22LR, the difference between my HD 5-20x and 12x is almost negligible.

I don't see how. Marine snipers used a 10x for a long long time. And I'm pretty sure they shoot past 100 yards. haha

Re: SS 10x42 HD for trainer?

I picked up a SS 12x42 mil/mil for my trainer, and I am very happy with the magnification. I chose the 12x because it is the magnification I most often use on my variable 3-20 and 5-25 scopes. It's enough to resolve holes at 100 yards and splash at 230 yards. but low enough that I can comfortably shoot it in positions other than prone.

Re: SS 10x42 HD for trainer?

I've got 2 SWFA 16x and about to pick up another one. It's an awesome piece of glass for picking pests out to 70+ yards! Amazing glass at the best price PERIOD!

I use a 10x to 200m just fine. Ran out of adjustment, have a 25MOA base incoming to fix that, otherwise I would be doing 300m as well.

10x is fine.
