I have searched and havent really found such a thread.

I want some ideas on an ultralight Rem 700 build. My goal is about 6 lbs. Post your pic of whatever you have and include specs and total weight. This should be interesting.

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

I'd even vote to broaden it to any action. I'm starting to favor lighter weight more and more so +1 for this.

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

I would agree to expand you options on actions.

Here is a Kimber 260 Rem all up weighs 6lbs 6oz. Stock has pillars and the action is bedded. Free floated barrel. Controlled round feed. Leupy 3.5-10x40.

Titanium? Wow, I'm gonna have to make a day trip down there. The site says Cincy and your profile says Wellington. Where can I get my hands on one?

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

christensensen arms does very light custom guns with carbon fiber wrapped barrels and carbon fiber stocks
Carbon%20One%20Custom.jpg

other than that i own a sauer 202 with an aluminium action in 300 win mag and it is very light
for example but that might be a bit high priced in the US

I've seen those Christiansen rigs before. Scary light. Not cheap, but a legitimately capable featherweight.

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

How light a short action package (say 6.5 Creedmoor or .308 Win) that maintains accuracy for competition strings of fire? We have a Rem 700 ADL .243 WIn that shoots a ragged cloverleaf hole for the first few rounds at 100yds, but opens up to almost 3 moa by the 10th round rapid fire. Every time I estimate the cost to upgrade that Remmy—bottom metal, true action, barrel, stock, etc—I could almost order a new SRS.

What do the metallurgists say about aluminum actions?

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

A factory Rem 700 Mountain Rifle dropped into a McMillan Edge isn't a bad place to start! In long action it comes in few ounces under the 7 lb mark all up with scope and rings (6 lbs bare). In short action its right around 6.5 lbs all up (5.5 lbs bare).

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

I personally believe the best readily available lightweight rifle is a Tikka T3 light. My best friend wanted a light 308 for his wife and i recommended this to him. The action is super smooth and sent the rifle to Mark at SAC to install a muzzle brake and can shoot subMOA with it with factory match 175gr. And best part it comes at 6.25lbs. Cant get much better than that for all of $550 for the rifle.

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

Ultra light, yes but I also wanted a very high quality illuminated scope for first or last light and a suppressor.
So, Remmy 243 sporter cut to 20" BDL floor plate.
Kaps 2.5-10x50 around 20 Oz.
Roedale Delta suppressor 6.7 Oz
Carbon fibre inlet moulded stock my son made me. 19.8 Oz as on rifle. Later the stock went to a show in the UK and I never saw it again...

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

The 700 Rem. is a second rate action to spend more on.

The Kimber 84M's and 8400's are state of the art actions with CRF, M70 type safeties and are made in stainless steel.

The old Rem. was ok have a century ago as a cheap gun. They are only push feed and the bolt handles fall off.

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

Here is a Gander Mtn Guide in .243Win, basically a poor mans 1st Gen Ti, or known as a "faux Ti".

All up with scope/bases this rifle weighs 6 lbs. 10 ozs. And so far the bolt handle has not fallen off:)
2431.jpg

Remington KS Custom Mtn Rifle in .280Rem All up weighs just over 7 lbs so no ultra-lightweight but a well balanced rifle. Again, no falling off bolt handle on this one either - laffin!

Looking at thiis first post I read it's from Ireland which is intereting in that we don't read much of any hunting or shooting there.

I see the beast hanging has cloven hooves? What is it?

Also the rifle has a silencer. Interesting.

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

Savage 99,
that was a Sika calf taken in full run.
It was a very wet day like the other 365 that year.....
Sika Deer, Cevus Nippon or Japanese Sika are very good eating and are great hunting. Bit like hunting ghosts.
Smallest of the three deer species in Ireland. Fallow and Red deer the other two.
Some info can be found here. http://www.wilddeerireland.com/

The sika stags or spikes can look at you as if you owe them money especially in the rut.
Our season runs from Sept till end Feb.
My son Peter took this little 6 pointer 2 weeks ago with a atlas joint shot. Old Sako Forester 308 with LW barrel by Roedale and PSE graphite Stock.
Peter is also gifted at laying up composite stocks.

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

Here's my lightest CF rifle.

A very early LH Kimber of Oregon M84 chambered for the 6x47.

Unknown stock manufacturer but it's stiff, perfectly shaped, and weighs 19.3 oz.

Not a particularly skinny tube at .600" at the 22" muzzle. I'm certain the relatively heavy barrel (for a LW rifle) is the reason the balance is so great.

Scoped with a new VX-2 3-9x33 Ultralight in Talley LW's

6# 1.7 oz. of perfectly balanced splendor.

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

edi,

Great picture and story.

It's good to hear of hunting in Ireland.

With all of the open grass land that I see are there and rodents (varmints) to hunt?

Tell and show us more if you wish.

Thanks

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

+1 on the Tikka T3 in .308. Lite, accurate and a smooth action. Love my gun and would recomend it even if it were more expensive.

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

Youth model .243 not a dedicated ultra light build but it is ultralight..

I don't want to hijack the thread and will keep it short.
We have almost year round fox, crows and pigeon shooting.
Nov - end Jan has pheasant, duck, woodcock and snipe shotgun shooting.
plenty to do.
If you like you pm you e-mail and I'll post a few pictures.

How bad is the kick on this setup?

I'm a recoil pussy
laugh.gif
hahaha its why I sold a 81' Remmy 700 .308 with 22" barrel to much kick but very light. Never thought to install a brake before I sold it. I should have because it would have been a nice rifle and light weight for long hikes.

Is the 700 the ultimate action? No. Is it a damn good action? Yep. I've never felt the need for CRF.

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

Thanks mdesign,

Aron the 243 doesn't kick with 80gr. One notices 100gr a bit but in my case I use ultra light Reodale suppressors that weigh 7 Oz and take most of the recoil away. Even on my 308.
Got another sika spike this morning.

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

This rifle is about five pounds less the scope, including rings:

IMG_0510_zps834432ab.jpg

That is a 300 WM, Rifles Inc Strata model. In Titantium, it can be about 4.5 pounds. Obviously has a brake, but recoil isn't bad, my twelve yr old nephew can shoot it OK. And it shoots very well too.

Next year, the 6x20 is being left behind for a 1.7x10 Swarovski.

Lex makes a nice stick. I have a Strata stainless in with his POUNDER stock in .300WM also and its an excellent high mountain gun. Just dont shoot more that 9 shots....heats us and walks FAST! But, it in a THIN barrel and it's first 2 shots the most important are always touching each other. It a great gun. RG

Re: Ultralight build picture thread

that.. looks fun. and a great looking stick too!
