Scope help on tactical comp rifle

I have shot many 3 gun comps and many f class matchs, but no sniper/tactical matches.

I looking for a scope for my new comp gun, DPMS 6.5 creedmore.

What are you guys using? I have a bushnell tac 6x24 50 that I love ( it has mil dot reticle) it is mounted to my 5R and don't want to remove it.

I was thinking of getting another with the G2 reticle for the DPMS, or may be the HDMR 3.5-21.

Out of the two which would you pick? Will the 6 power be to strong for comps?

Thanks

Re: Scope help on tactical comp rifle

I'm pretty new to this style comp, but have been shooting some local matches lately. I run a SS 5-20.
I don't use 20x all that often, and have yet to *need* it. It's nice to have for target ID, and for the smaller targets, but nothing that I couldn't do with a slightly lower power scope.
The 5x is similar, it's nice to have when scanning for targets, but I haven't run into a situation where having 6x be my low end would have made a difference. I could do 90% of it with a 10x and not feel like I was handicapped much.

For the reticle, if I were doing it again I'd look for something with a dot/open center, and an unobtrusive Christmas tree style reticle, and probably wouldn't worry about the power range as much.

Re: Scope help on tactical comp rifle

It totally depends on the targets you will be shooting. Local matches here in Colorado are small targets. Anything past 400 yards they are less then a MOA. This is where high power scopes come in handy. Anything under 16x and you will have a hard time seeing. For MOA or larger targets you can get by with a fixed 10x. So for best all around get a FFP 5-20 and you should be set.
