Rifle Scopes Scope Mount Issues

I have a millett LRS-1 (35mm tube) on a remington 700 that is in an XLR chassis.

My scope is a ball hair above the chassis, and it causes sight picture problems because the cheek rest won't go any lower. Obviously, I need to get the scope higher up.

Right now I just have standard millett rings. Should I buy a mount like the ADM recon or something, or could I buy AR15 risers and put them on my rail?

I know the more you add the more than can go wrong, but I don't have $300 to spend on a scope mount.

Re: Scope Mount Issues

Why not just get higher rings or a one-piece that places the scope higher? Plenty of good options around - Seekins, Badger, Sphur etc.

Here are some taller ring options, will these give you the clearance?

That's why I brought up the ADM Recon. I was just hoping to avoid spending $200 on a mount, as I am a poor college student.

The millett rings I have appear to be the same size as those. I can shoot it the way it is, but I have to get my cheek all the way pressed down. Stupid head.

Re: Scope Mount Issues

I don't have any great pictures, and I can't take any now because I'm at college, but here's a few. The scope may look like it's fine, but it definitely feels low to me and several others who have shot it.

Re: Scope Mount Issues

What's wrong with using Seekins rings? Seems like a cleaner solution to me.

Re: Scope Mount Issues

A little pricy (for me). I could send my rings back to Millett and they would replace them with high rings, but that would take some time.

The AR riser is only $12. Down the road I'll get a more permanent fix.

You mean, you need to get a proper cheek weld? Are you lookin through the scope in the picture you posted? I tell my son (7 yo) that his cheek should look like a squirrel's when he is on the gun stock- the stock should push up and bunch up his cheek. If anything, you look like you could get lower... The whole weight of your head should be pressed onto the stock.

Re: Scope Mount Issues

From the pics, it looks like your eye is not centred on the eyepiece? Maybe just the pic but....it looks like the scope is too high to me.

On the cheek weld - I hear what hlee is saying, but just make sure you are not mashing your face into the cheekpiece with too much pressure...it should be resting...not pushing.

Re: Scope Mount Issues

The problem is it irritates my neck and there is black shadowing in the scope most of the time until I get unpractically low.

It may look fine in the pictures, but several others who have shot it said it was low, or at least off the bench that's how we felt. It only needs a slight boost.

Re: Scope Mount Issues

If you shoulder the rifle higher in your shoulder pocket, does the condition remedy itself?

That stock appears to be adjustable for "drop at heel." If the problem is that you are too hunched over (thus irritating your neck) then a solution is to move the heel of the buttstock lower so that the rifle sits higher- relative to your shoulder- when you shoulder the rifle. This will allow your neck to be in a more vertical position when you shoot. Also, in the picture it looks like you are not quite limited out on the vertical travel of the cheek piece. And, what works well on the bench will most likely not work well from prone...

In the picture below (found on the web), notice how little of the stock the shooter has on his shoulder. With an adjustable drop at heel stock he could make it such that the whole butt pad is engaged with his shoulder pocket. This may not be a big deal with a 5.56 round, but can be painful and possibly damaging to your shoulder with a heavy recoiling round.

Re: Scope Mount Issues

Shit can the muffs, and get some ear plugs! Seriously, muffs wont let you get down without hitting them off your ears. Looks like your high enough on the scope, want about 2" center of scope to center of bore.

Re: Scope Mount Issues

You should be able to get a propper cheek weld with muffs. Lots of people (me included) simultaneously use both plugs and muffs while shooting without affecting cheek weld.
