50 BMG ammo accuracy vs price

I've been doing some searching online and want to find some good deals on 50 BMG ammo. So far the best priced ammo I can find is API in once fired brass from 50bmgsupply for 2.95 a round. Now how accurate is this stuff when pushed out to 1500 yards and beyond? How is the M33 ammo they sell these days? I find the m33 ammo for around 5.00 a round, is it that much more accurate? The ammo would be feeding a Serbu-50A.

Re: 50 BMG ammo accuracy vs price

I've shot the Federal XM33 in a Steyr HS-50, and printed a 1.5" group at 300-yards with it. That blew me away as I was expecting 2-moa with the stuff. I've also shot Surplus M33 from Singapore, and it shot between 1 and 1.5-moa. I bought some Hornady Match loaded with the 750-gr AMax, but haven't had a chance to try them yet. I found them on sale for $39.95 a 10-round box a few months back from one of the discount ammo dealers out East, but cannot remember which one it was exactly.

I bought the Federal (American Eagle) XM33 from Cabelas, and had a coupon for free shipping. I think it was around $2.75 a round when I bought it last year, but think the price is between $3 and $4 from them now. So far, I've had really good luck with the Federal stuff.

Re: 50 BMG ammo accuracy vs price

Nothing you mentioned will be effective and accurate at 1500 yards.

AP is the go-to accuracy projectile for USGI type ammo, but the BC on the AP/API/APIT/M33 projectiles is not all that good.

If you want to get the most out of it, you need to go to the Hornady AMAX projectile. You can get this loaded by a good maker in once fired brass for $4.00 a round.

Jerry Hazlett, Amer-I-Can, in OK is the go to guy for this stuff. You should be in the half MOA accuracy range with a much better BC. The two together will make your Serbu perform on a completely different plane than with the USGI type stuff.

The AMAX projectile turns the 50BMG chambering into a real performer. The USGI stuff is for letting someone shoot your rifle that wants the thrill of firing a 50 or for rough zeroing to save on AMAX loaded rounds.

+1 on all of the above!!

I was at Knob Creek a few weeks ago and picked up some other ammo from Jerry. By the time I got there...his stock of "the good stuff" for BMG ammo was more or less gone. Get in touch with him and he should be able to set you up.

Also, if you haven't done so, you might check with Mark and find out what sort of ammo he's personally recommending for optimum accuracy out of his rifles.

+2

I occasionally buy the American eagle for the brass(LC). Sometimes palmetto has it for 26.99. But I reload so for friends or shooting steel I load milsurp stuff with milsurp powder.

For the good stuff I use Lehigh 800gr and VV powder in IMI brass.

You should look into reloading. I wouldn't have bought the .50 if it wasn't a package deal with reload equipment. I can get the cost very low for plinking type loads.

Re: 50 BMG ammo accuracy vs price

+3 I e-mailed Jerry and he was very helpful, has the best prices around for match and plinking ammo. He just came back from Knob Creek and said he will have more 50 BMG loaded up first thing. I'll definitely be reloading for the 50 but would just like to stock up on some ammo and play around first. Thanks

Re: 50 BMG ammo accuracy vs price

Buy a Lee 50bmg reloading setup and you'll be able to make AMAX match ammo for the cost of milsurp.

Spend a couple of minutes and run the numbers, it'll pay for itself very quickly.

Yup.

$3-4 a pop for match grade
$1.25 for API/APIT

I would never own a .50 and not reload for it. Only reason I ever shoot mine.
