Tripods for XLR

I asked awhile ago and everyone recommended Daniel Jenkins, but I just wanted to see what XLR users are using.


I want a tripod that will be able to fully support the rifle if I have to get up and leave it for a minute. I didn't think the SSP2 that Daniel Jenkins uses actually locks the rifle in.

That's exactly what I was looking for... and then I saw the price.

I almost want to try to build one now.


I'll keep my eye out for a used one, or just stop acting poor cough up the $300.

That does look like a nice package. I also just found a cheaper version of the hog saddle, the Triclawps

Currently on the military and Gov side Manfrotto is king. Manfrotto's aren't cheap but you get what you pay for.


Here are four great tripods to check out. I prefer the 055 models because they manage recoil better but the 190 models are lighter and cheaper.

Ball action heads are the most popular for snipers and the strongest in regards to carrying the loaded weight of the rifle. Here are three great options. (The 054 Magnesium ball Head is my favorite and what I personally use. It is also the favored head with the USMC West Coast Scout Sniper School.)

Manfrotto 496 Compact Ball Head


Of all these options I think the 055XPROB tripod with 054 Magnesium Ball Head is an amazing shooting platform with the HOG Saddle. You can't go wrong with any of the above.

The Hog saddle will allow for many different systems to be used with a very fast set up time. I like mine and they have made it even better now. Pictured with the Alum 055PROB tripod

HOG Saddle works for the XLR and a variety of other shapes with or without pic rails.

Additionally you can clamp in field spotters, LRF's and all kinds of other stuff.

These photos were shot to show you can use a cheap Manfrotto tripod, but I prefer the 055XPROB and a ball head. It's much better for rapid target engagement, but it is heavier.

I also have one of Daniel Jenkins PRS Tripods. They are excellent, but if you want to clamp your rifle in, the HOG Saddle is the way to go. I love the fact that I don't have to have rails on everything to make it work.

Use heavy Bogen tripod for rifle support . Drill & tap and Put together a Throw-Lever QD Pic. rail attachment - to the - Bogen Quick release tripod head plate .
It will hold & support a heavy rifle threw anything you want to do . Has not failed me with XLR Boltgun or AR . Even worked great with my AICS heavy barrel .

Heavy Bogen Tripod is expensive enough & this only takes a very small amount of work to make .
Very inexpensive to make & also very Strong & will support anything out there that your tripod will hold-up .

Mount a hog saddle to one of these and you'll be good to go. It's lightweight, sturdy, and easy to stow away in your pack. This is the Medium QD Tripod with SSP-1.

The hog saddle is super cool, BUT if your stock is painted or coated i would imagine the rubber grips on the saddle rubbing it off. it's also very exspensive. i recently just orders the rest from PRS to mount to my existing small tripod.

And you don't thing recoil over 1000D Cordura isn't going to sand off some paint?

Seriously, it's a rifle not a classic car.

However if you clamp the rifle into the HOG Saddle properly it shouldn't be moving around much. That thing has enough clamping power to prevent a 18lb tactical rifle from falling out.
