I started to just inquire about 6.5 Creedmoor but there are many more I'm sure.

So, what's the best case that can be used to form 6.5 Creedmoor with the least amount of work?

Also, what others can be used and what has to be done in addition to forming, i.e. inside/outside neck turning, etc?

Finally, is there a list somewhere of common cases that can be used to form other calibers? Or list them here.

Thanks,

Paul

Re: Cases that can be used to form other cases?

For the Creedmoor, I have used Remington URBR brass and Hornady 308 Match brass. I only resized 2 of the Hornady's, but have resized 50 of the URBR.

The reason I even bothered with the URBR brass was so I would have some SR primer brass to test. They turned out perfect, but I don't think it was worth the trouble. The SR primer (450's in the main) in this case is maybe not enough with H4350. My experience is that the Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor case is of very good quality and I was maybe trying to reinvent the wheel.

I have not had any problems with loose primer pockets with Hornady brass, but I have only 6-7 reloads on my brass with 43 grains H4350, BR2's, 140 grain bullets. This not a light load, but I have no pressure problems in this rifle with this load (140 VLD and 140 Amax). This rifle shoots much better @ 2800 fps than it does at 2700.

YMMV

Cool. So if .308 is good to go, would 7mm-08 be easier to work with? .243?

Re: Cases that can be used to form other cases?

Paul,

I am sure the 7-08 would work too, but I always size down as I don't use an expander button on my dies. I know of the donut issue but have never seen it with the cases I have sized down. My experience reforming cases is limited to the 6.5 Creedmoor and a 40/65 I have.

I won't waste a Lapua case to see if it works, and I understand that the shoulders are thick on them.

If you just want to do as I did and see if you can, have at it, but I did not see any improvement with the URBR SR case resized. Are the loads in them accurate and the numbers good over the Ohler, yes they are. But, so are the Hornady Creedmoor cases.

We are all looking for that edge aren't we.

Indeed. My interest is that I am a range scrounger. I pick up a lot of nice brass. .223 7.62x38, .308, 7mm-08 and .243 are very popular. Long action is 30'06, .270. Lot's of 30/30 too.

Understand. The range I shoot at is private so the only pick ups would be mine or my shooting partners.

Go ahead and give it a try. Just be sure to have a sharp trimmer!

Yeah. I wonder if a cut off saw can be used to do an initial cut and then trimmed to size conventionally.

Do you know anything about fire forming?

Re: Cases that can be used to form other cases?

Any 25.06, 270 Win, 280 Rem brass I pick up becomes 30.06 brass.

any .243 Win, 7MM-08 or .358 brass I pick up becomes .308 brass.

I've turned a few 6MM Rem cases into .308 (takes a lot of trimming) with no issues in a couple of reload cycles.

I rarely find .222 magnum brass but it becomes .223 Rem. brass after resizine and lots of trimming.

When a .30-06 case neck splits it becomes .308 brass after lots of trimming.

Very cool. I wonder is there a list somewhere that compiles all the possibilities? I think that 30/30 can become 30 Herrett (?). Won't 7.62x39 make 6.5 Grendel?
