I have a question for you guys. I am going to camo a couple rifles. I have done a golf cart and a couple 4 wheelers with paint so Im familiar with the process. I am trying to decide if I should do it with paint or Duracoat. I have done quite a few rifles and pistols in solid colors and digital camo with the duracoat and like working with and the finished product. Is there any reason I shouldnt do it with duracoat other than the permanent factor?

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

I have no expirence with the Duracoat but I used the Krylon Camo and I think it worked out really well.

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

Having sprayed rifles with both, I'd vote duracoat. Krylon wears quickly on high use/contact areas. Duracoat also leaves a much nicer finish if prepped/applied properly.

In fact, I'll be duracoating 2 more rifles this weekend.

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

As much as I like to change things around, is the very reason that I use Krylon. I have been spraying Krylon for quite some time now, and I have no problems with it's durability.

But, more than anything else, I like it because I can change it easily enough without a ton of hassle.

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

I like Krylon, if you can resist the urge to touch the darn thing for a few days, it will stick pretty good. Sure it rubs off in places, but doesnt flake like duracoat can. If you choose a fine speckled pattern (like sponge or marpat) the rub marks are not so bad. It adds character, in that you actually shoot the rifle and not leave it in the safe. Also, you can just run to Ace and grab some Khaki, Black, and Olive camo and have it done tonight. Again, if you must handle the rifle wear gloves, as the oil in your hand and face will make it tacky.

Best is Krylon Camo Fusion (sticks to plastic)

This is why I use Krylon. With an old toothbrush, a rag, and some paint thinner, you can make it look like it was never painted in the first place. I have reservations about using something more permanent like Duracoat, but don't even think twice about using spray paint. It is very easy to remove or paint over if you don't like it.

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

I'm a spray paint guy.. I like when a rifle gets a little "patina" to it.

I am wrestling with this too but I will not own a safe queen. That is how I justify it to me.

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

I krylon a couple rifles so far, the first one, i didn't like how it turned out so the paint was easily removed and repainted for pennies.
Aervoe makes some great paint in many different colors with more choice than krylon, I will use those next.

Which do you think would blend better?

The grip area looks like it has a little sheen to it. Does it retain oils from your hand or is that just camera tricks?

Don't think about it, just take your time and do a good job. It's like when you get a fresh pair of boots and you treat em like gold until the first mud puddle then all bets are off.

It's really hard to mess up! As long as you go through the steps to protect certain parts. You can always remove paint too!

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

OP, you Duracoated those toys, so you have enough experience to do the job right. It's just a matter of deciding between temporary or permanent and executing.

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

I recently started using Duracoat and I like it better than krylon. I have pained several guns with a rattle can but the rest of my guns will see Duracoat.

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

Thats beautiful!
How much was that set-up, if you don't mind me asking?

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

Okay everybody, here is a list of pictures of my rifle and my friends all the way through the process. Make sure you tape off all the turrets, the bolt, reciever and trigger; and plug the barrel with an earplug. You'll also wanna close off your objective and eye-piece to prevent paint getting on your lenses. For the detail I used a fake fern, plant and pine needles for the green break-up and screen netting for the brown break-up. Hope you like it.

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

I have used rattle can as well as duracoat, I've also had luck using spray paint then going over that with a light coat of duracoat clear, a great way to get low cost tuff paint job.

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

Krylon and foliage can't be beat for the price, and ease of touch-up. It's way too much fun, especially if you like to change it up on occasion. Try a semi-flat enamel clear if you happen to lay down the ultimate pattern and want to avoid it wearing off.

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

One member here had a really good in between idea. He sprayed and cleared a base coat with Duracoat and used Krylon to spray the pattern and accents so when you inevitably change your mind, you're not stripping down the entire thing.

I'm a terrible fisherman, gotta take what I can get!

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

I have done it both ways. After dura coating one I won't krylon one agin unless its a "in-a-pinch" the duracoat last longer and will take so so much more abuse. Currently duracoating my LR-308 as we speak on the brown coat today. You can krylon one in a few hrs. Duracoat takes 24hrs between coats. Well that's what I do

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

What type of prep before painting?

Also any source for non-dital pattern kits.
? I will likely buy from DSG good folks. If it looks good then Clear coat

Re: Guys that camo their rifles.....

If its parkerized all I do is degrease thoroughly and spray. Has worked very well. If material is smooth I ruff up with 600 grit. As far as camp pattern. Duracoat sells many u can get through brownells. But I make my own taking 2" masking tape laying it out on piece of kydex draw out pattern cut out with razor knife. Spray tan, then green then brown. If your going to use black, do female pattern. If u like pm me and I'll take more photos as I finish and send u a write up.

All of what you painted can be replaced easily and for a fraction of $3200.00

Just paint it, It makes it your very own. Ya can't beat having a TRULY unique rifle. Plus its scientifically proven that if you piss can it it makes it at least 1/4 moa more accurate.

Wow. That's so obviously a good idea I'm kicking myself for not thinking of it. Good post.
