My buddy took me to the range and let me shoot his rifle at 1000 yards and when i hit the steel plate I was hooked! The next day I sold 2 hunting rifles, a mortar mixer, and some masonry scaffolding and went shopping for a LR rifle. I intended on bringing home a Savage 110 long range hunter but instead bought a Remington SS 5R 24" 308. I put Mark IV base and rings, Harris swivel 9-13 bipod. Probably going to go with a Nightforce 5.5-22X50. I have a buddy that handloads so I was going to try Berger 175gr VLD, Lapua brass, Federal Gold Medal #210M primers, and Varget powder. Cant wait to get a scope on it, and break the barrel in so i can start playing with loads. All of this is based off what i have read, being new to Long Range shooting i was wondering am i headed in the right direction? Thanks!

Re: Remington 700 5R

Went down your road with the same rifle, scope, and bipod. Great reliable rig. Mine liked 45gr Varget, 175 SMK, Lapua brass, and CCI BR primers...

It did not like the 155s, never grouped at all like it did with 175s.

welcome to your new addiction....LOL

Re: Remington 700 5R

Your not kidding about it being an addiction, i should be asleep right now but im up reading about scopes, load data, etc...

Re: Remington 700 5R

Sounds like a great setup. I've always been a fan of Remington, currently have an R700 AAC-SD. Decided to go with that over the 5R because I wanted to suppress and run subsonic loads and the AAC-SD is ready to go for that.

On your optics selection have you pondered FFP vs SFP? I know I was stuck on that for a while and flip flopped between the two. It really all depends on what you are going to use it for, you're going to have to look at that if you haven't already.

There is a wealth of information here and from what it looks like you have done some reading and found what you were looking for. Welcome to the hide!

Re: Remington 700 5R

should be picking mine up on friday..cant wait...ya making me antsy

Re: Remington 700 5R

That's the way i started my 5R with some differences here and there. As far as loads are concerned the VLDs might be difficult to group because of the sensitivity to seating depth and the jump to the lands required from a factory rifle. Assuming your loading to mag length. So far I've run 155gr scenars, 168gr SMKs, and Berger 175 Gr BT LRs with great success. All shot around 1/2 MOA.

Be sure to post some pics

Here are some threads that have a good bit of load data for other people's 5Rs

Re: Remington 700 5R

Squash, yeah perhaps a no on the 175 vlds, try the new 175 gr Match OTM Tactical or a 175 SMK, better choices imho.

Re: Remington 700 5R

I got my 24" not too long ago, and sent it back because some (anal) stuff, (scratches etc.) But I figured if I was payin for it I wanted what I paid for, a new rifle, that looks new. I ended up trading for the 20", and have put around 60 rds down range. It shot factory Fed 168MKs under.4", with 3 shot groups, and 45g varget for 175s and 46g for 168s, and it's averaging .4" at 100, and under an inch at 200

Re: Remington 700 5R

Sounds like you're off to a good start. Shot 0.74 MOA yesterday at 200 yds with SMK 175 gr., then cranked it up to 300 yds per iPhone MD Ballistics app and had 2 hits on 24 inch steel hogs. Craked it again per app and had 3 solid hits on 48 inch steel ram. Les than 6 inches. Good luck !

Re: Remington 700 5R

Your def off on the right path. I started with a 700 LTR that got me hooked. If you get a chance, check out Lapua Scenars loaded with Vihtuavori N550. It shoots the lights out for me and my rifle.

Re: Remington 700 5R

Yeah, your doing it right. I just got my 5R 20" threaded barrel last Friday and already took it out. Shot 168 FGMM and it shot 1 ragged hole. I am very impressed. I had an old PSS that I had cut down and in an AICS stock that I sold. I have another one that is custom so I figured I would sell the short one to get an AR 10. Well needless to say, I sold the AR10 and got this 5R. AR10 thing just isn't for me. I love this 5R and now I am looking for a different stock. Been looking at HS pst035 vertical grip but they say the barrel channel is a bit bigger than the 5R. Really want another AICS though. You are right about this being addictive. You are definatly on the right path though. Enjoy playing with it when your done.

Re: Remington 700 5R

Thanks alot guys! Its's comforting to know that at least im starting in the right direction. Cant wait to get her scoped and to the range so i can really get involved with some of the more detailed aspects of LR shooting!

Re: Remington 700 5R

What you guys think about the 5R in 300 Win Mag?

I want to get one of these either in 308 or 300 win mag. Since I have the LMT 308 MWS already I was leaning towards the 300win mag.
