I recently pruchased a Rem 700 Varmint 1/12 twist 26" in 223. I thought it would shoot 60gr Nosler Ballistic tip Varmint but I was wrong. Went to the range with 5rds of each from 26.4gr to 27.2gr of Varget and got zero good groups. This thing was throwing bullets every where. Looking for help with a new bullet. What have you had success with? Please point me in the right direction for a good bullet and grain wieght. Thanks in advance

Re: 700 Varmint 223 advice

With the 1/12 twist you're going to be stuck with light weight (and short) bullets, 55gr and under. 50 or 55gr VMax's should shoot good out of it.

Re: 700 Varmint 223 advice

Have same gun. It prefers 50-55gr flat base bullets ONLY. 53gr SMK with 26 gr Varget for paper OR 55gr SPT with 26gr Varget for varmints or coyotes. best group was sub .4 moa with 53 SMK with 25.4gr of IMR 4064. How can anyone complain about that with a factory gun. All jumping around .010-.015. Have used these loads out to 525 yds and they're still grouping well. Love all my 700 varmint models. I have a friend that had luck with 60-63gr flat base bullets, but not sure of his recipe. Can check when I get time. All boat tail bullets were all over the place and would never group well. Some rifles hate BTs, but you won't know until you try. Are those Noslers BTs??? Also, I haven't seen a .223 Varmint version that isn't a tack driver.

Re: 700 Varmint 223 advice

Yep you are screwed for shooting anything over a 55gr pretty much. I would shoot some 55gr blitzkings, they shoot very well out of a 1x12 twist.

Re: 700 Varmint 223 advice

There's also a good chance you won't be able to shoot the 53gr. Vmax either.

Re: 700 Varmint 223 advice

My stock .223 700 varmint shoots Hornady 50 grain V-Max bullets and H322 powder in the .3s. That is a bt bullet. I can't ask for any better performance from a stock rifle on pdogs.

Sierra Blitz King 55's shoot great in mine.

Re: 700 Varmint 223 advice

I just bought a 700 Varmint.223 at Dicks a week ago or so, but have been working (or at least at work) too much to get out with it yet. Thanks everyone for the great info for when I do get that chance (hopefully soon).

Re: 700 Varmint 223 advice

I have a Remmy 700 VTR with a 1:9 twist. All of the advice so far is spot on, stick with light, flat-base bullets. Mine will shoot up to the 77s but still does the 40s well too.

Here's a good recipe:
27gr Varget, 40gr Nosler HPBT "varmageddon", seated .040" off the lands (2.250" OAL)

The 53gr Vmax has about the best BC (.290) of any of the light .224 varmint bullets-- I'd certainly pick up a box and try. I figured because of the length they had a 50/50 chance of stabilizing out of my 1/12 twist .223 VS-SF II barrel but they shoot amazingly well when pushed by N133 @ 3250fps. I've only shot for groups with that rifle at 300Y a couple of times and they were consistent 1/3 MOA or under for 5-shots, well within "minute of squirrel" at that range. After finding that load I promptly sold about 1200 new in box 50gr Vmax bullets; I never got either the 50gr or 55gr Vmax to group that well and their BCs aren't nearly as good as the 53gr Vmax.

Pick up a box of the the 53s and give them a try; if your rifle likes them they will probably be the best option for your 1/12 twist barrel.

I use 27.2gr Varget with Hornady 40gr .010 off lands. This is a compressed load in commercial brass, in LC bras you can still get a little more in there but this works in both my SPS Varmints shoots .3s

Re: 700 Varmint 223 advice

That's good to hear the 53Vmax work in your 1-12tw. I'm shooting them in a .223AI w/Hart 1-9tw and those little buggers shoot amazingly well and work awesome on yotes. My fire forming loads shoot just as good as the formed loads. Both shoot .1's

To long of bullet for a 12 twist,
If it wont shoot the light ones, BUY A CZ VARMINTER!;)
