Im looking to see if anyone has a Black Powder Mortar? Curious to know how they perform. Im am thinking of getting one for New Years eve and just keep blasting it all night lol. I would like to get one that has a "deep boom" rather than sounding like a pistol going off

I see some of them online for around $400..

Re: Black Powder Mortar

I have plans in the works to build 3 Coehorns to shoot golf balls.
I have no idea of how much noise it will make.
I have a 20 mm barrel that I converted to a muzzle loading cannon, and if loaded with about 200 gr of FFFF and a paper wad, will echo for a while down the valley.
Much fun New Year.

Re: Black Powder Mortar

I have a golf-ball Coehorn and a 1" naval cannon. Both loud. Very, very loud. The Coehorn puts golf balls virtually into orbit... The naval cannon is very dangerous with a projectile. Did I mention loud?

I want to build a Yorktown Cannon (like the one at the National Firearms Museum) someday. 2" bore. But too many other projects right now.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Re: Black Powder Mortar

Many years ago a friend of mine made one from a piece of 8" round. Bored it to accept bean cans full of concrete. A 35mm film canister full of black would send that about 400 yards. We used to shoot it at a bare hillside. Got pretty good with it after a while. You could see the can at about mid trajectory, after it slowed down a bit. It was mounted on a block of wood about 2' long, 18" wide and a foot thick.
