For you 300 Win Mag guys what type of accuracy are you getting? I have an extra LA receiver I'm debating on a 300 build. Really love my 6.5 and don't know how close a win mag can come to bugholes.... but would like the extra range

Re: 300 Win Mag guys....

I have 2 pretty good loads, both very accurate.

Chad @ Long Rifles Inc. blueprinted a SS 700 LA and chambered a Sendero contour Krieger for me. My first load is 208 Amax's launched by 76.4 Gr. H1000 - shoots consistent 5 shot groups in the .300's and .400's My second load is a 215 Berger load over 75.3 H1000 and shoots pretty consistent .300's and occasionally smaller. That is realistic accuracy that I can reproduce time after time, plenty good for anything I want to do.

I recently thought about doing a 6.5mm but I really, really love the way a 208 Amax smacks things at 1200 yards.

Re: 300 Win Mag guys....

The cartridge is as capable of performing incredible feats of accuracy (especially at longer ranges) as the individual squeezing the trigger. The accuracy potential is there as long as the rifle is built with that in mind, suitable ammo is deployed with the rifle, and the shooter does his/her part.

Seriously, some of the most accurate rifles built are built around the .300WM. It is a highly capable and proven round. The biggest hurdle I see with people switching from something like a .308, .260, or some of the various 6.5mm rounds is the increased recoil which can lead to a decrease in accuracy. This is nothing that can't be overcome with proper training, trigger time and possibly a quality muzzle brake (if the competition or setting you are shooting in allows for a brake).

^^^^ running 76.8 h1000 w/ the 208. same thing. I tested the best loads 74.7, 76.8 and 78.2 10 rounds in quick succession (not rapid bolt) on a 6" swinger at 900.

76.8 wasn't the tightest but the most consistent with 8 hits. The higher end seemed to open up when the throat warmed up around 7 rounds or so.

You will not regret it. Put a good muzzle brake on and enjoy a hard hitting 30 with proven loads.

I run 210 gr. Berger VLD's (hunting version) with 73.5 gr. RL-25 and get consistent 1/4 MOA groups. That thing sings.

Re: 300 Win Mag guys....

Mine doesn't like H1000 at all. I had a 308-8mm wildcat years ago that ran very well with it and had 8 pounds left over. Tried it in a new 300 Win Mag and got 1.5" groups with 220 gn Sierra MKs. Switched to Reloder 25 with the same bullet and seating depth and got groups consistently less than 1/2".
