Car Dealer Has Buyer Arrested After Price Error

Priority Chevrolet Dealership in Chesapeake, Virginia made a mistake when they sold Danny Sawyer a new Chevrolet Traverse for $5,600 less than the asking price. So what did they do when they realized this mistake? They had Mr. Sawyer arrested for theft. After spending 4 hours in lockup and getting released on bond, Sawyer did the next logical thing: he sued the dealership for 2.2 million dollars. Well, I guess it IS possible to get a good deal in this crazy world of ours...

LOL, having worked at a dealer, I can tell you there are plenty of tools in one. Very few salesman are straight up.....

Re: Car dealer has customer arrested for his mistake

My wife works for the biggest dealership in town here and my buddy went up to have some cosmetic work done on his Roush Stage 2 Mustang (unfortunately he didn't get to deal with her since she sells cars and he was dealing with the service department). They gave him a free rental car while his Mustang was in the shop.

Well... He hunts me down at work and asks for a hand in dealing with a rather interesting situation. The service rep forgot to fill out some of the paperwork on the car and lied to the GM about his mistake. They reported the rental car as stolen (dealership owned SUV). He gets pulled over and arrested for grand theft auto even though he has all the paperwork for the rental from the dealership.

First thing the GM of the dealership tells him after him and his wife go in the next day is "What do you want from us? You own us at this point."

Got everything from a full exterior overhaul of the car, upgraded exhaust and suspension, a ridiculous gas card and even a bunch of gift cards for him and his wife to eat free dinner all over this town.

He could've very easily of sued them for everything they were worth but since the GM was stone cold honest and blunt about everything from the get go they gave him a chance to make it right.

Either there's more to this story and LE was lied to about how the customer took possession or there's an LEO and Dept that's about to get sued as well. There are ZERO grounds for arrest or charges based upon some idiot selling a product for less by mistake. The Owner's offer to let him keep something that by contract he already owned was a pathetic attempt to avoid the inevitable. He would have been better off trying to give him the car at that point.

Re: Car dealer has customer arrested for his mistake

He had to have the bill of sale in the new car with him and it should be easily proved that he owned the car. You can't get out of dealership without filling out paperwork. Something doesn't sounds right or that dealership totally fell down on its checks and balances. I wonder how he got past the finance guy on this deal?

That can go a long way. I think Id also base it on the fact that it wasnt the dealership, but a penny ante lackey that worked for them who did it. And that his wife might actually want to keep her job

My wife wasn't involved personally in this situation other than bringing it to the attention of the GM and the Owner of the dealership.

On the other hand though... a multi-million dollar lawsuit against them for wrongful imprisonment and all sorts of other things related to the arrest very easily could've led to massive layoffs and bankruptcy once it got out.

People make mistakes all the time. No one is perfect...especially in a large scale business environment. The most important thing to do is immediately recognize the problem and do whatever is necessary to resolve it on the customer's behalf. Honesty from a business will make damn sure that people will keep coming back over and over and send their friends as well.

Re: Car dealer has customer arrested for his mistake

Had a salesman at a ford dealership sale me a 70 chevelle used as is. Went for a test drive and stopped by my mom's job and we are looking the car over. I open the truck and in the trunk was a nice craftsman tool set and a rechargable flash light and 2 nylon bag chairs. I ask the saleman if the tools and chair comes with the car. He states yes the car is as is. About two days after the purchase I get a phone call from him stating the stuff in the trunk belonged to the dealerships owner and if I'd return it. At first I said yes and then got to thinking. (within the two days I'd done blown the head gaskets on the 396 which was freshly built per salesman) He told me they came with the car. So a few more days go by and he phones me again whinning about how his boss is going to make him pay for them out of pocket. I tell him car sold as is with stuff in the trunk per you. He now has the owner call and threatin me with a law suit over the stuff. I told go for it. I'd done talked to my lawer.

Seriously! Looks like a 2008 Dodge caravan!

Re: Car dealer has customer arrested for his mistake

A friends son got a loaded Dodge Ram for price of a base model on a pricing mix-up. Dodge dealer owned it and let him have the truck for the price they listed.

I am still waiting for the mandatory blaming of the cops for violating the guys rights. Or did I miss it?
