So... Here's my question. I am deciding on the Savage 110BA in 300wm for $1900 or a Sako TRG for $3000... Is the Sako that much better? And im having trouble finding a place to buy a TRG!

I was in the exact same boat. Got tired of looking, and the TRG-42's you find on GunBroker were priced high for the 300WM.
I bought the Savage 110BA..but actually found a new one in .338LM for $1600. I have been playing with it for the last 3 weeks, and will say it shoots better than my TRG-22 did! It's just the cost of reloading components that hurt...the gun shoots extremely soft and is more accurate than most of my customs. I adjusted the trigger to 1.5#.
My plans are to order a new 28" .300WM barrel from McGowen (prethread Savage)threaded for brake, and install a new Mag bolthead. This way, I still have the large magazine which will handle up to 3.760 COAL.
I will still be under $2K, and have a 300 WM with a good barrel.

There really is nothing wrong with a Savage. I own a 300WM Savage that lives in a McMillan A5 stock and accuracy is stellar.
In this load development pic. I was testing some 185 Lapua Scenars. At 300 yards my average was .96"s. At 100 yards the average was .39".
That being said, I own a TRG and consider it worth every penny. I have never regretted spending the extra $$.

I have shot both and the Sako IS really that much better. The 60 degree bolt throw is awesome and the action is smoother than any of my custom guns. The bolt handle on the savage is just too damn long. If you can find one, get the Sako.

You'll also have some good luck getting a Remington 5R in .300 WM too. They Shoot Dam Good out of the Box! I've never shot a Savage 110BA before, but I've seen some great results.
But Remington will still give you much better aftermarket options for later upgrades. The Factory Setup for the 110BA might not be everybody's "cup of tea".

my best advice would be not to settle.
Define your specs and what you want and the plan around that. If you compromise you will only regret it in the end.

Cool, I like the Badger M2008 action with a timney trigger and would go with a Krieger barrel w/brake. And i would use a manners T-4A stock. Who would be good to have this built from?

I'm currently having 2 300wm being built by Brad Turner at Superior Tactical Solutions and a 308 currently at Phoenix Customs.

And on the other hand maybe I should just get the TRG in the 308... Its just that the 308 just doesnt do good at 1000yds. You have to load 190g bullets and then your velocity is like 2500fps. I guess I just like the ballistics of a 300wm better...

If I go big and get the TRG in the 338 Lapua about how much per round will it cost to load my own instead of buying boxes? Boxes of 338LM are about $85 a box thats 4.25 a round!!! If I can load my own for $3 a round then ill go with the 338LM...

I load my .338LP for $1.00/round with premium bullets (not counting the brass cost). This is for MATCH ammo.

If you haven't settled on a cartridge then you're options are endless.
What is your primary purpose for the build? tactical comp. long range hunting, target?
look into the 260 rem and 6.5 creedmore.
There are only very specific needs for somethingas big as the 338. although it is undoubtly on eof the finest long range chamberings.
The 300 can get you well beyonf 1300 with the proper rounds and for a considerable savings over the 338.
likewise the 6.5 chambers can reach well beyond 1000 and be effective for stell and paper.
give us some insight into your needs and we can steer you in a better direction.

I checked out the sentinel stock and love it! Not a bad price either. I think a Stiller TAC 300 action in 300wm with the sentinel stock is a good combo with a good match barrel.

I like a #8 barrel contour with a surefire brake. And the bighorn action is a nice one, but it prob will come down to which one I can get first btw the bighorn and stiller. My $3000 mark is without glass,rings and bipod. But ill prob go with a Zeiss 6.5x20x50. Great clarity and I love the Rapid Z 1000 reticle.

the only issue you may run into is the chassis having to be relieved for the safety lever. You might as well have the smith who is building the barreled actions install the chassis, that way they can test the system as a whole.

I might throw a wrench in the works with my $.02, but the TRG has the features of several "custom" actions put together, side bolt release, lug area/design, integral dovetail for scope mount, quick do it yourself barrel change, one of if not <span style="font-style: italic">the</span> best triggers available, and I am finding the steel that Sako uses in their barrel to be as remarkable as the Border? barrels AI uses, their stocks are as adjustable as they come, and the flush fitting 7rd TRG mags destroy the AI mags imho.
Your retained value may also be typically greater with the TRG as the 300wm is not currently being imported into the US (supposedly still made, just not imported??)
I think if the TRG fits you very well, go that way, if not- any of the other routes you are looking at can perform to the same level.
You may be pleasantly surprised what pops up for sale as Christmas bills pile up.

Very true the TRG really cant be beat in my opinion, but I cant bank on finding one in a 300wm so I'll plan a comparable build i guess.

With the your active duty status, Leupold will give you some great deals with their MIL/LEO purchase program.
I would save a little more cash and get a good pre-owned Nightforce 5.5-22. Some great deals poop up here in the for sale section.
Also look at the Vortex Razor HD 5-20
and the SWFA 5-20

Are you up in Jacksonville? I'm down at SOUTHCOM until mid January. You should try snd make it to Swat roundup in Orlando Dec 2-7. Gonna be a great show. I'll have my STS built 300wm you can check out to get some ideas.
Shoot me a PM. I'm going to have either a PWS or RD brake left over. ( I told STS to use which ever they though looked best so I dont know which one) I'll let you have it if you're not set on the surefire.

Gotta set a couple things straight here. Yall are adding up the cost of the components and wonder why your build quote was high. It's called labor. You think they're gonna order all your shit and put it together for free? And yes, you're gonna wait. Get used to it. Nothing custom built happens fast.
Secondly, what the hell are you gonna do with this rifle? You're letting available options dictate your choices and that's bass ackwards. What is the purpose of this weapon? Do you really NEED a 300WM? Is terminal ballistics an issue? What are you hunting? Are you only punching paper? If so, how far and in what capacity? Are you gonna shoot off a bench, prone, positional, or tactical-type shooting and moving? Is weight a concern? What kind of weather and environments will this weapon be exposed to?
You two have gone back and forth for 2 pages and have made exactly zero progress. Take a step back, figure out what you want to get outta this weapon and we can help you from there. If you're kicking tires and you don't know what you want, stop wasting our time.

I would Highly Recommend the Bushnell HDMR 3.5-20x50mm Scope with the G2 Ret. It's probably one of the best bang for the buck out there. And if you search around, this scope has been widely accepted in LE/Mil/Comp Circle. Many Comp Winner won with this scope on the rifle, and Check out the GAP Video Thread, they used this Exact Scope in ALL of their Videos. If you shop around you can get a fairly decent used one for around $1k.
Got Two of These on my Rifles from Liberty Optics (Scott will definitely treat you right). If you ever see one in person you'll know it built like a dam TANK!
