LMT MWS Optic choice

Just picked up an LMT MWS with a prs stock. Ideally i'd like a USO 1.8x10x44 or 3.2x17x44 but don't have that much scratch laying around right now and still want a pistol AR.

So i need a cost effective alternative without sacrificing the rifle's effectivness

Mission-----

magnification for effective Shots out to 600 yds
Also low enough magnification for close moving shots 100yd

Will most likely go with an angled BUIS or micro red dot.

Would like to get an optic and quick release mount like an ADM for under $1000

but if i could get a substantially better setup i would go up to $1500.

Really unfamilier with optics and have yet to buy some good glass. So any advice or suggestions would help

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

If you want to stay under $!k, I like the vortex pst. That said, a substantial upgrade a bit over would be the bushy dmr. I played with both and felt the dmr was worth the extra coin. Ultimately I ended up going one step further and got a NF for my LMT, but both the vortex and the bushnell had impressive glass for their respective price ranges.

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

For your price range of an optic and mount for $1000, you can look at the Vortex PST series. That scope along with a mount will put you at or close to your max price range. Next step up for an optic that is only slightly more is the SWFA 5-20. Those retail for $1300-1500 depending if you want illumination, but you can find them for $1000-$1300 in a private sale on here. There is almost always a used one or a new one on the for sale section here.
I shoot USO, Vortex, IOR, and SWFA and have had great luck with the SWFA. It is a hell of a scope for the money, hard to compete with. Either of these two pics, Vortex or SWFA, should suite your needs.

Huge optic/ fun gun. I was running a uso 3.2-17 when I first got this gun. I liked the optic and thought it was very appropriate for this rifle in the 308 format. When shooting 260 however, I can reach past 1000 with no issue. So I had this other s&b sitting on the bench and tried it out. At first I thought 5-25 was rediculous (and it might be), but there's a hell of a lot of difference between 17 and 25 power when milling a target and not much difference from 3-5 power. Keep that in mind... Also, yay horus reticles

Disregard cats.

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

Thanks guy's for the advice I havent looked into the Vortex line yet and i will. any options on the scope that are a "must have" with the 308 semi platform? does a 3x-5x on the low end really make the close moving shots hard? I just don't want to sacrifice too much of the purpose to make it solely a long range weapon. I know the PRS definitely caters more to the long range but a UBR or standard stock may be in the cards for the future.

also matu52 what bipod setup is that? i like how low profile it is.

Atlas bipod.

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

Hopefully swfa will release their 1-6x soon. That comes in at 1k and should do what you want. Don't know if you want to wait though. If you haven't already, check out the scopes that go up for sale one here. You'll see some good deals come through.

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

Look at the Leupold MK6 3-18 or the bushnell 3-21.

Horus reticule or bust.

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

For the $1,000-$1,200 range you could go with a USO ST-10 with the offset BUIS. This is my plan that way the knobs EREK and the windage on the left side will match my SN3 setup on my tactical bolt gun.

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

As you can see from the responses, there are lots of options. Recommendations range from 1-6x to 5-25x.

I really like the Nightforce 2.5-10 option as well. Nice glass, lightweight, and durable - really designed for the SPR-type role, which is about what you are talking about.

I also like the Bushnell HDMR (3-21x) recommendation.

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

Thanks for all the thoughts. an opinions on the SWFA 3x9x42? I do like the option of more magnification. and the only thing i don't like about the ST10 is that it's fixed power which sort of limits my close target shooting. I could handle a 5 on the low end if it was a really nice scope. and my goal is to reach out to 800 one day. but i do have my remington 700p LTR in 308 which is more dedicated to that.

A votex PST in 2.5-10 with a bobro mount would be a good setup and keep you at your budget.

Yeah I regret selling mine. Good little scope.

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

So i've changed my mind up a little bit don't know if the opinions or recomendations will change or not. The rifle will now be a dedicated long range platlform. Would still like to stay around 3x on the low end tho. no more than 5X. "even tho i have been considering the 6x24x50 PST.... "

the PRS will remain I do not need a quick release mount anymore. if that will save some cost if not it could still be useful.

my ideal scope is stil the USO 3.2x17x44 but really need to be at no more than $1000 for scope and mount.

"bought a LWRC 5.56 for my close quarter needs"

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

Under a grand I still like the Vortex PST 6-24. You will be hard pressed to find a better package with a price tag under 1k. FFP is listed mid-900s and SFP mid-700s.

The Bushnell DMR (G2 or mil-dot, the Horus models are a bit higher) I like ALOT more but will be a bit over 1k. They list ~$1300 but if you contact vendors (look around here) with them in stock most have some room to play.

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

Thank you! i've been leaninf the PST 6x24x50 FFP route... i just don't know if ill like the 6x verse the 4x16x50... decisions decisions

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

While not an LMT you can get an idea of how much space a 6-24PST will take up. I had to get the 20MOA mount as I was running out of elevation. This a great scope...

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

I'm also in the market for glass for a MWS. Was dead set on a 2.5x10x Nightforce but am starting to consider the Leupold VX-R Patrol 3x9 to save some $. Until I started looking into optics recently, I hadn't looked into the Vortex brand- how does a Viper PST 2.5-10x44stack up against the VX-R? I love the Mark 4 Leupold I have on my FN A1 so I know they make a good product, but I really wish the VX-R patrol was available in the 4-12x40 configuration with the TMR Reticle.

I can't help but think I am going to wish I had a little more magnification than 9x which is the only reason I haven't gone ahead and pulled the trigger on the VX-R. I'd still like the NF but besides having to save up a little more for it, I've never been thrilled with the prospect of a 32mm objective other than the nice compact size it brings.

So, other than waiting to do a Nightforce is the Vortex quality good enough to consider that Viper PST 2.5-10x44 up against the VX-R patrol?

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

I have used the Burris PEPR mount on several of my Nightforce scopes and have been very happy with them. The are well made and rock solid. I used both the quick release and the fixed and much prefer the fixed model. SWFA has them for $69.95 for the fixed model. As far as the scope I have 2 of the Vortex 4-16X50 FFP scopes but now wish I had gotten the Vortex 6-24X50.

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

I am faced with the same issue. I need glass for an upcoming MWS. I think I'm going to go with a March 2.5x-25x42mm. My original budget was about 2K, gut the illuminated version will push that hard. I am trying to decide if it is worth the wait saving for illumination. Any advice?

The scope will live in ADMOUNT Triple Lug Rings and go between the MWS and a 24" barreled Rem 700 300WM. The size, the weight, the glass quality and the magnification are driving the choice.

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

Vortex at your price range, but NF would be better. 2.5-10x NF are hard to find, but that would be a good mag range.

Just got this in the mail a week ago. Can't wait to sight her in!

2.5x10x.32 zerostop, brand new style turrets...

Beautiful piece of glass!

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

Go full bore and get a Premier 3-15 Tactical double turn and Badger Unimount. Maybe I've turned into a snob but I love this setup.

I had the 3-9 SS and a LT104. I was totaly reved out and had to hold over a 1.5 mils trying to hit targets @ 1k with 175's @ 2550fps.

Badger Ordinance 20 MOA riser with Badger Ordinance 35mm rings. Rock solid. I considered a couple QD mounts but the fact that I have a 35mm tube on my USO, my choices were limited. I also had a reality check in that since I dont have BUIS on my rifle, the likelihood of a glass malfunction that required me to pull off the scope quickly and switch to BUIS quickly was pretty farfetched.

I'm using the ADM 20 MOA Mount, I have no issues with it. As a matter of fact the RTZ is just as good as the Larue mount that it replaced...

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

I had a uso 3-17 on my 16" MWS and it was a LOT of scope for the gun. Could easily have gotten by with a 10x variable and the gun would have a little less mass. However I can really see the advantage of more scope on a 20" variant. All depends on your necessary ranges.

The AI one piece mounts shouldn't be ignored.

this is a true statement. I would definetly consider less if I have a shorter barrel .308 but on the 20" chambered in .260 I think a little more glass is a good thing.

USO SN-3s 1.8-10X, 37mm objective, EREK, ERGO, green JNG reticle, Spuhr mount.

Here's a shitty pic of JNG in green.

It's a pretty tight unit. Only complaint is that she's sort of heavy.

NICE Nightforce! I've not seen the new turrets, looks great. I've got a 4-16x42 S&B but haven't had a chance to mount it. A little big but hopefully it'll be everything I'm hoping it will be.

Re: LMT MWS Optic choice

I'd be looking at the Nightforce 2.5-10 or 3-15 scopes for the role you list.
