What's the best way to get rid of old ammo? I have some old rounds, mainly old steel shot but some 5.56 stuff too that I wouldn't feel comfortable shooting and wanna get rid of it

Re: Best way to dispose of old ammo?

Anywhere from 20+ to jus a few years old. Sorry I shoulda been more specific, my main concern is corrosion and splitting cases

Might want to dig a pit.

Re: Best way to dispose of old ammo?

Check with your local Bomb Squad. Many of them have a burn trailer and will happily take it from you.

Re: Best way to dispose of old ammo?

I would pull the bullets on the 5.56 and deprime them and use the brass or give it to someone the reloads.

When the chief is having lunch with the editor.

I had a few pounds of old WC860 surplus a year ago that I wasn't going to use (now I only use H50BMG, btw). I poured some around my yard to test the fertilizer theory and it greened right up.

Haha. Uh....no.

Re: Best way to dispose of old ammo?

I wouldn't say the brass is good for reloading, its cracking. Otherwise I'd shoot it. The friends gun idea is sounding good lol

Re: Best way to dispose of old ammo?

It's kinda like the Indian ammo from the 80's I got for 308 blasting ammo. It shoots ok, isn't the most accurate stuff, but does have the ability to be reloaded after removing the military crimp in the primer pocket with a reloading swage system. My son found some surplus 30-06 for his Garand, but I told him to inspect it very closely before purchase for cracks and other issues like corrosion etc. He said he received a really funny look from teh man in teh shop when he opened up the can, and opened four random boxes and took out a big dual glass magnifying glass to inspect the stuff. He said he 'schooled' the man who was actually not quite knowledgable about his ammo anyway...man I love the new generation. They learn shit faster that we do, and if trained correctly, will school your ass on things you THINK YOU know...my three are freakin WHIPS!

off course, but you are so right. When I returned to college at 40 (having barely graduated high school) the youngsters could just absorb the stuff I had to pour over for hours.

Re: Best way to dispose of old ammo?

Why get rid of it? Why not shoot it? Does it have some kind of signs that would make you think it's not safe to shoot?

Re: Best way to dispose of old ammo?

Just shot 2 boxes of 1943 30.06 through the Garand that a friend found in a building they were tearing down.Didn't appear to be in bad shape. Would have never known it was that old

And if it does appear to be?

Re: Best way to dispose of old ammo?

How many? If it's just a few and you don't have a bullet puller, take a pair of pliers and pull the bullets out. Throw the powder in the yard. Put a little oil on the primers and discard the brass.
