Looking for a POF 6.8 spc

Let me know what's out there. Looking for one for deer hunting/target. I'm kind of torn between the 6.8 spc and the 308. Would love to get my hands on either. What are some of your thoughts?

Re: Looking for a POF 6.8 spc

Tracy,

The 6.8 isn't near as much power at hunting ranges as is the .308. That said, it's lot more power at hunting ranges than is the .223 which is now legal in a lot of states it didn't used to be. IMO, any of the 110-130 gr. bullets are excellent deer bullets and especially at ranges we mostly hunt at. Even the .308 is a little over powered, believe it or not. Although, I was told once, and it it's true to a point, when it comes to the deer of a lifetime, you're never over-gunned.

In short the 6.8 is all you would expect it to be. Just hit 'em where it counts and you'll have no problem. Try to break both shoulders and you'll be disappointed.

Re: Looking for a POF 6.8 spc

The POF 6.8 rifles/carbines/SBRs are somewhat of a rare bird. Their numbers pale in comparison to the 5.56 and 7.62 variants that POF has produced over the years and they usually command a high price when they do come up. This also has t do with the fact that POF has more or less walked away from the 6.8 platform altogether to focus their attention on the 7.62 and 5.56 platforms (as well as other new project they have in the works). Your best bet if you want to go the 6.8 route is to find a complete POF upper and a separate lower and build it yourself. I know for a fact that there are uppers on Gunbroker now, and I just saw someone looking for a trade in the WTT section for a POF 6.8 upper.

Otherwise, try scouring the BARFCOM equipment exchange or M4Carbine (and post a WTB ad over there) and see what turns up.

Personally, while there is nothing wrong with the 6.8 for your stated purposes, the .308 is all around a vastly better option for medium to large game hunting and target shooting/precision rifle shooting unless you just want more punch than a 5.56 in a smaller, AR-15 sized package.

Re: Looking for a POF 6.8 spc

Depends on what kind of hunting you plan on doing. If you're going to do a lot of stalking and be able to get within 300 yards, an AR chambered in 6.8 SPC with a 16-18 inch barrel would be fantastic. From the 16" barrel, the 95 grain Barnes TTSX bullet can be sent to 2900 FPS and opens reliably at 1600 FPS. Out of a good quality upper, you can place that bullet very reliably right where you want it as well. However, it's not cheap. The Hornady 120 SST is a much cheaper alternative with a factory loading of 2460 FPS. Not as fast as the Barnes, but a great performer as well. Very mild recoil.

If you're sitting still and weight isn't such a consideration, a solid platform .308 is hard to beat. I wouldn't recommend any barrel shorter than 18" for a .308. You're just giving up too much of the .308 performance with a shorter barrel than 18". Louder and more recoil than the 6.8.

Are you open to other brands? Want to stick with a piston rig?

Re: Looking for a POF 6.8 spc

I helped with a T&E on the 6.8spc, including Barrett (REC7 piston), RRA, Wilson C, Addax Tactical, and DD. Believe it or not with the 85gr SSA Barnes bullet, the RRA was more accurate out to 500 than the Barrett. #1 was very close but Addax Tactical edged out Wilson Combat at more distance, but both shot great, with 3000fps being the norm on the 18" brrls. And the DD was the lightest most versatile one, but it was a 1/10 twist like the RRA. I think DI, and piston have their places, but the DI seemed more accurate.
BTW I use an RRA for Deer hunting, and from 300 inside, they make a good whitetail gun.

I am also looking at the LWRC. Thanks everyone for the info and opinions.

I'm not much on the piston systems or POF guns but if you can hold out a few more months, LWRC should have their new Six8 rifle out, it will be a proprietary lower that uses Magpul mags. At least that is what I'm thinking for a time line, the 2013 Shot show would be perfect for such a release.

Federal should be releasing their new 6.8 ammo too which will be a big step for the caliber.

Re: Looking for a POF 6.8 spc

Thanks for the heads up. I would like to hear more about everyone's opinion of LWRC vs POF.

Re: Looking for a POF 6.8 spc

Just so all you guys know this new guy tracy308 has had my LWRC 6.8 tied up for three days with an "I'll Take It" on 10/31. I guess all the while he is shopping for other guns. Today, I got the email that a family emergency has come up and he can no longer buy the gun. I wonder if it is a POF emergency. Nice.
